Questions:

Were the tires under 50%? If they were, then you didnt 'get' the tires- the dealer was OBLIGATED to install them if it was CPOd.

What was wrong with the windshield? That is rather binary: glass is legal or glass is illegal. Was there a chip the dealer said 'doenst need to be replaced'? Last version of the CPO guideline I have said:

Quote:

Replace cracked windshields regardless of length.
Replace if chips are larger than 1/4 inch in diameter. Repair chips smaller than 1/4 inch in diameter. Replace scratched windshields in the driver’s direct line of sight or if larger than 2 inches in length. Polish small scratches.
1/4 inch is a damn small chip...BMW dealer selling a car that doesnt comply with the CPO standard is cheating. Problem is proving it once you drive off the lot....

I'll be honest. I'm new to the community, a new future BMW owner, and this is my first time buying a car from a dealer.

What kinds of things can I negotiate with the dealer on a Certified Pre-Owned? Should I demand new tires, brakes, and stuff like that?

I am going to have a third party mechanic review the car even though it is a CPO.

Also, the dealer told me that the internet price from BMW.com >> Certified Pre-Owned in my area is not a negotiable rate. He said, "these things are a commodity, and you wont find any dealer around us that will budge on the price on a certified pre-owned".

I'm in technology sales at a large Fortune 100, and we get beat up on price all the time. Is his statement true? I think he knows I want a CPO X5 2013 Badly. I mean, at the end of the day, if he won't come down $2,000, I won't do the deal. Am I being too strict? Are dealers flexible? Its a 35i Premium, 29K Miles, $39.8K.

I appreciate any help in navigating this transaction.

I see you are in California too. I just bought a 2013 X5. The CPO Dealer price for the options I wanted was around $45K. I found a guy who buys specific cars at the auctions. When I told him what I was looking for he found me my car for $35K. Let me know if you want his contact information

Then I added a after market warranty for 5 years or 100K miles (whatever comes 1st) for another $3K

compare prices on bmwusa, they have a section for cpo's you can search. I know a dealer near me drops their prices fairly consistently the longer a car sits on the lot.

Also, be aware that there is a stop sale on 2013's and prior X5's due to the airbag recall.

There is no fix right now, but they are doing a temporary replacement with the new unit until a permanent fix is developed. I'd research it if you don't know about it.

Takata airbag fix is in at some dealers, which is why I'm looking.

I have heard that Takada is now shipping replacement airbags to dealers in limited quantity. A dealer near me recently received 5.

I bought a 2012 3.5i CPO in 2015. 28k miles. Original sticker was $61k, so it was optioned somewhere in the middle, has Premium and a few extra bits. Nothing outrageous.

Dealer came down about $1700 from the asking price. The general consensus from the pricing experts here using Manheim auction data and the CPO dealer cost was that it was a fair deal, maybe a few hundred high. It had 4 new runflats and new front pads/rotors. I declined a warranty, but squirreled $3k away for eventual fixes.

The dealer produced the CPO inspection sheet and the complete service history file, with the POs name redacted.

I would ask about the airbags. From what I understand, they are replacing like with like. They degrade over time and the theory is that putting a new version of the same thing will buy time until they have replacements that don't use the same technology. It will still be a faulty airbag that will have to be replaced, but it "should" be good for a couple of years. There is a very lengthy discussion on this on another board (Bfest) in the "ask a dealer" section.
