Negotiating a CPO At The Dealer

private

To me it's a little bit pricy given its the last year for last generation. When in negotiation, it's all about leverage. What you need is backup plan b C d e f.

Good luck!

What about a private party sale on the same or similar vehicle? Surely there are some available in your area.

My fear is that is a private party, I am spending too much time hunting, and taking it to a private mechanic for verification (costs that can add up at $175/check)...

Most of my BMW friends and work colleagues tell me to go CPO all the way just because of the maintenance. But at the end of the day, computers and programming are my thing and not cars...

Never ever let the dealer know you badly want the car.

OP should read current CPO docs, esp the 'what isn't covered' sections...

Agree on don't get hung up on the specific car at that specific, boiler plate dlr.

Not many dealers will let customer take 'tire kicking car' down the road to their Indie for a PPI, and doubt 'that dlr' will.

I can speak from experience that dealers reluctantly negotiate the price on a CPO. There are factors in play such as the options, color, and mileage. A diesel, a third row seat, a sports package, a good solid color, lower miles, will make dealer to hike up the price to mid 40's and don't give a rat if you going to walk away, because they damn know someone else will snatch that up. So if the unit you are talking about is really loaded (MSRP 70K+) then the 39k + taxes and tags is a good price to pay for a 29k miler.

Most dealerships I tried to get negotiate would only go $500. which is insulting imho. Try doing your homework by scouting comparable CPO units in nearby states and then call this dealer, ask to speak to sales manager, be very polite and try to present your case.

I command you for looking for a CPO unit. Its the only way to go with these IMHO.

You may spend more time looking but didn't you say you were taking it to a third party mechanic anyway? In my experience a private party sale you will get a much better price as they are willing to negotiate more.

I looked at a number of pre-owned cars at several dealers a couple months ago. I thought I had a solid "in" with these dealers, too, and was put in the VIP Group. They were only willing to come off by about $500 to $750 on cars. Not exactly VIP...

One of the reasons for this kind of behavior is that the used car market is still in demand for used cars after the downfall in 2008. After a few more years when it gets flooded with all the 20+ million cars that are sold every one of the recent years the used car dealers's business environment will change a lot. If someone wants to buy used cars of course ;)

I agree 100% - the used car market is nuts right now. Buying a new car is also crazy - after my e46 was totaled on 3/25/2016 I had a 2016 GMC YukonXL as a rental car for well over a month. The sticker on it was just south of $70k!!!
