"No Warning Tones"
Came back from a week vacation and my 35d is show this message "No Warning Tones", radio and bluetooth do not work. Ideas?
|
I'd start by checking all of the fuses for the infotainment system. Then I'd plug in a scanner that is capable of reading the codes from those systems.
I believe the warning gongs are played through the stereo speakers. So if the head unit is dead, that would explain the error. Need to figure out why it went dark. |
I'm guessing maybe the voltage on the battery has dipped after a week on vacation - would be interested after a long drive if it magically started working again on restart -
If yours is an 11 I guarantee the original battery is in there and for the amount of electronics on these cars I'd say 6 years is damn good lifespan and look for replacement soon. |
Hmm yeah, my first troubleshoot would be checking the fuses. Then battery voltage, that's what I've been reading so far. Some said it could be a blown amp, but I know that was literally replaced the day before I bought it so I think that is highly unlikely. I'll also check the battery manufacture date. Just weird that's the only thing not working, vehicle drives no problem, unlock/locks, heat/ac, windows all work, etc
I don't think we had rain last few days, so I don't think it's a water issue but i'll look around |

(Unrelated anecdote, my 2003 e46 is still running its original battery 😵 😵 ) |

Anyone know what fuse number the radio is?
I checked the battery area, no moisture at all. Battery is definitely original BMW but I don't think it's a battery issue. Wife drove the vehicle all day. I found this laying around in the trunk (left compartment), not sure what it is? http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/a...psynfz80ff.jpg http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps69bympkv.jpg Disconnected the battery to see if that would help, but no dice. Comfort Access, Radio, Bluetooth do not work. Everything else works. |
That's a MOST bus termination loop that was probably connected to part of your system there in the left compartment where the stereo equipment is located. Do you have the original stereo or an aftermarket? This would also include the amplifier. If you look in that compartment you'll probably find a fiber optic pair in a connector hanging loose where this would plug in.

Absolutely agree. The E70 system CANNOT fully charge a battery, even with hours of driving. On the E46, any special care to that battery? Trickle charger perhaps? |

Not sure that wiring have to do with it since it was working without it right? I would have that amp checked.

Yes, that would cause Radio and Bluetooth not to work and I do believe it would affect the comfort access too. Open the left compartment and look for thick "wires" hanging. They would probably be in a connector together and maybe have plastic wire wrap (black corrugated looking) around them. If the MOST bus isn't in a completely closed loop nothing on the bus functions.
Sorry I don't have any pictures. |

The only other thing I can think of there is if the shop tried to reset the bus at the junction that is under the cover at the left rear door opening (cover next to the seat back) and messed up the connections there. Do you have Sirius satellite or do you have the preparation for it? If you have the preparation, in that left bin there will be a "set" of wires/cables that are wrapped in a foam protection sleeve. They are usually stuffed under the plastic tray that you can remove the retaining clips and pull out. If you check/unwrap that with the key in the ignition and you see a red light from within the center of one of the "cables/wires" then you have found the problem. They wired up the line at the junction I mentioned above and have caused this problem. If no light, then I would be looking for the loose connector in that bin. Hope this helps. |

Love how all these electronics are connected and if one fails, they all do...:dunno: This website has the same loop I found in my trunk. Bottom of the page: How to Troubleshoot MOST bus or how to find the faulty MOST unit ON ANY BMW, AUDI, PORSCHE, VW, MERCEDES BENZ and other cars with OPTICAL FIBRE OPTIC MOST network | BMW LOGIC7 |
Well I have an appt at the stealership Saturday morning. Hoping it's the amp because its under warranty. I think while I am there, i'll have them do the fuel filter and they owe me emissions.
|
Check your satellite radio. Mine went out a few months back bought the most loop connection you pictures above and installed it and everything came back and works like a champ. I don't use satellite radio so no loss for me.

It's right next to the amp. Unscrew like 4 screws and the bracket that holds the amp and satellite radio comes out. The Sirius is the small unit on the end. There are 2 fiber optic lines that go into it. They are probably lose on it now and you plug that loop into them and you should be good to go. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Satellite radio is the other rectangluar silver box mounted to the side of the vehicle held on by 2-3 plastic nuts right? I know there is a fiber optic harness (green/black wire), and another harness. Both are easy to take off. So put the look in the green/black fiber optic harness? There are NO loose cables in the left compartment I've checked twice now. Everything is hooked up to something Picture would be very helpful |

Yes it's the green and black harness. Unplug it from Sirius and plug that loop in and if it's the Sirius all your bells will come back. Then if it's not that move to the next component in the most loop and plug the loop into that connector. I got lucky and thought it was the amp. And tried the Sirius and b everything worked. I don't have Sirius Radio, so unless I try to loop the amp to see if the other components will work?
|
This loop may have been left by the technician when troubleshooting the amp. When the MOST communication is disrupted there will be no audio, warning chimes ect. You use the optical loop to eliminate one component at a time.
|
UPDATE: So the vehicle was at the dealership for about 2 weeks. It winds up being two faulty comfort access door handles...That's it...two electric door handles throws off the entire system. This is why I like to buy BMWs pre 2007

Just a loose connection
Hopefully may help someone.
Had a similar issue: no audio, no tones, no USB. Checked all of the fuses - all were good. Then, as I was about to about to close the fuse panel under the glovebox, I noticed a cable that looked like it had become unplugged. As it turned out, it was an optical audio cable and actually, there were two plugs, which looked like they had been mated together but held together with a single loop of vinyl electrical tape. It looked like a hack job but it had to have been factory installed. I bought my 2012 X-5 in 2014 with less than 24K miles. No one has touched it since. Of course, after 8 plus years, the tape failed. Still, seems very uncharacteristic for an automobile in which every connector is designed to withstand a sabot round. I held the connectors together, prayed, and turned on the radio. Lo and behold, there was music in my ears! I wrapped it with a whole lot of electrical tape and closed it back up. Tones are working, too. Forgot to check the USB but I will follow up, if needed. |
Take the tape off, use a piece of shrink tubing and it should last as long as the vehicle. Harbor Freight sell a kit of assorted sizes and colors of shrink tubing for a few dollars.
|
Actually, I wasn’t sure if it was vinyl tape. I think it was shrink tubing that came undone. It left an oily residue. I’ll use it next time.
|
Funny that I’m searching on a related issue and my own comment is first reply on this post.
After being parked all weekend my 09 has no audio, no warning tones. No warnings on dash (for that anyway, I have SRS and TPS lights). Comfort access still works at all 4 doors, I’ve had some issues for years now with no comfort access at the rear hatch. But that may or may not be related. Checked all of the fuses listed for the radio at the rear fuse panel and all pass a visual inspection. I guess I’ll pick up a MOST loop and start down that rabbit hole. |
Ended up replacing the amp. All good now.
