X5 E70 water in boot
Hi All, I have water in my X5 E70 boot in the same area as the battery! As the battery is mounted higher, the water is not in direct contact with the battery. The water seem to be held below the car somewhere and when I drive the car (I assume when I accelerate) it pushes the water towards the back of the car and up and through the gaps and holes in the boot. Any insights where the water might have come from? I have seen posts elsewhere saying this could be tailgate seal (doesn't look like it to me in my case) or drain being blocked (I don't know how to locate the drain). Any insights will be very helpful. Thanks.

Sunroof leaks are a known issue. Make sure all of the drains are clear.

My X5 doesn't have a sun roof so I have ruled that out as the culprit for now. Will check the tailgate seals again. The side compartments on either side of the back, that house the tail lights and other electrics seem dry. Water seem to be coming up from the middle of the back.

This from the 2012 Order Guide. I didnt look up other years, nor look at the V8s. Ive never seen one without a sunroof...or moonroof as they call it. I wonder how many there are? |
In London there isn't much sun to see thru the roof... :stickpoke

I asked about a sunroof delete option and was told that it was not available.

Try 2 things the inner tail light seals and the boot where the wires go into the tailgate or the body. Ive seen instances where one or both have failed.

Thanks. It doesn't look like it is the seal on the tail gate lights. What is odd is that it has been raining quite heavily the last few days and the water that I can see in the boot is NOT getting worse. However, when I drive the car, water then gets pushed through the gaps in the bottom of the boot. So it looks like there is a leak somewhere else in the car, water is then collected in the undertray somewhere and not getting drained and only comes up when I drive it.

Rear window Seals? I've never heard of it happening....It cant be anywhere else in the car but in the rear. The design of the vehicle simply wouldnt allow for the water to collect/come in anywhere else. I know this is a dumb question but have you sat in the back and had anyone hosing down the exterior around the seals.

Any luck identifying the leak? I'm currently in the same boat. I ordered the tail light seals and I'm going to replace them as a precaution but I don't think they are my problem.

I just replaced the seals this past weekend following the video on youtube. I thought i did a good job - but I just checked my lights after a pretty big rainstorm and what do you know there was water in them :swear:
I cleaned the old sealant off very well and placed the new ones as instructed.. only thing I can think of is maybe I tightened the lights back in too much making the seal uneven? :dunno: Anyone else have a problem with this fix? |
Water in the tail light assembly itself? If so, are you certain the light housings aren't cracked somewhere or the assembly glue has failed thus allowing water inside?

Why does bad weather kick German cars in the butt so hard? Im glad I live close to a desert for the most part. LOL I had a Porsche when I lived in Alaska and the darn thing was always full of water. It seemed like ripping the carpet out and cleaning and looking leaks was a yearly thing (same with my VW and Audi).

Yes I ended up fixing it. In additional to replacing the seals, I also caulked along where the black plastic meets the red plastic/lens. That seems to have fixed it.

I’ve now fallen victim to the water in the back. Fried my hatch module.
Resealed the wire grommets and seems ok now. |

Trying to avoid using the hatch until I can get a new module. But making due as is. |
