Coolant Leak, can’t find the source?
07’ X5 4.8, just replaced the water pump as it was making a little bit of noise, and what I thought was coolant coming from the weep hole. After I got everything back together I noticed that I was still leaking coolant. It’s not catastrophic yet, used the coolant pressure tester to try and find the leak this AM, but I can’t physically see the source of the leak. It seems to be coming down from the front of the motor, but the water pump area is dry above and below. I would say the leak I had previously was whatever is leaking now, and not my old water pump.

Is there evidence of coolant on the front? Or you're finding coolant under the car and assuming it's from the front of the engine?
There's a number of hoses in that area, so it could be any of those. Also a sensor in a hose. I had a leak from a hose that was getting on the belt so it was squealing during cold starts, but there was very little noticeable evidence on the engine itself. Also could be your valley pan, which I believe will start to weep out through the timing cover somehow (I haven't had this yet so haven't looked into how to track it down). Personally when I'm trying to track down a coolant leak I'll go through a physically touch every hose connection point, particularly the bottom, to feel for any wetness and/or crustiness. |
Had Similar issue found thermostat gasket leaking. 2008 x5 4.8 . The thermostat has built in gasket

Behind the water pump, on top of the engine block there are small hoses connected to the main hose of the WP. you can check those to see if one of them is leaking.

Ok, after I spent some time trying to find the leak, I noticed that the water pump was leaking around the seal to the engine. After I started pulling things apart to check the torque on the bolts I noticed that it was the water pump temp sensor leaking. Just enough where you couldn’t notice the coolant on the shiny new cast pump, and it was trickling down the front side of the motor. So I will start here first, and look for more leaks.
I did not install a new water pump temp sensor, just transferred over from the old pump. Should it have a crush washer type seal? There was no washer in the old pump, I just cleaned the surface and put it on. Looking at the OEM diagram it doesn’t show a washer, out looking up the part at the parts sites I noticed a washer on one. Can someone shed some light on this for me? Need to seal it up properly and move on to the next leak, that is if this isn’t my lucky fix.
