Water Pump Coolant Sensor leaking
 
Hello all. After replacing my water pump (bearing failed) I started seeing a small leak around the sensor that bolts on to the pump. I reused the same sensor that was there before. I thought I made a mistake not replacing the washer. so I went ahead and bought a new sensor (figured old one is now old) that comes with a washer. Put that on and it's still leaking.. what could it be? I didn't really use a Torque Wrench so I kinda hand torqued it. thanks in advance for any tips.

This is what I would try if I were in your shoes.

Remove the sensor, clean all the staining off the water pump, washer and sensor itself, make sure everything is super dry and then put a light film of silicone sealer on both sides of the washer, let it tac up for a minute or so, not dry but kind of get sticky, and then tap it with your finger on both sides, it will pull the silicone ďupĒ just a little bit and then reinstall and let dry for a dozen or so hours.

You may get some nay sayers who say replace the washer.., but Iím guessing youíll be fine [emoji106]

Does it need to be a high temp sealant or any silicon sealant would do?

I usually try to use high temp, red orange or black, as long as itís sensor safe. Worst case of you have some of the orange laying around, Iíve used that a number of times in the past with good results.

Apologies, orange is not usually high temp, red and black are [emoji106]. That said I have used orange on everything from the water pump itself to valve cover gaskets and as said, with good luck.

If orange is all you have, Iím sure it will work just as well.

So i am starting to think the sensor is fine and the very lite coolant residues i see below the sensor is coming from the weep hole? Where is that weep hole exactly? Left side, right side or right on the middle of the water pump?

Have you or have you had your coolant crossover pipe (runs front to back under intake manifold and valley pan) replaced? The location of the coolant leak from the weep hole sounds like the one the 4.8 leaks from when the crossover pipe rubber ring starts to fail. Had the same on my '08 with 4.8 and just purchased the All German Auto Coolant pipe, installed it and all leaks stopped.
