Quick look tells me BMW part is 11 65 7 811 405
Borg part is 5439 988 0088 $780 ish...remanned BMW or new borg |
I don't know how long you plan on keeping the X... but if you go for the FCPEuro one (which is listed for the X5) you get a lifetime warranty on it. For $200... might be worth it. You'll have to do the value math for your situation.
They are different part numbers. Could be different turbos (unlikely), clocked differently, or different ports. 335d: 11657811404 X5d: 11657811405 |

Someone made a good point about the clocked position and I would rather pay $200 less to loosen 4 bolts and reclock the housing. And to go by parts numbers online show the turbo as part number 5439 988 0088 however my housing shows 5439 970 0088 Also funny they all use the same picture for their listings I was not aware any of the 35d engines were different. Figured they were pretty modular. |
5439 988 0088
5439 988 0089 Both part numbers on borg Warner’s website comes up for 535D |

Im not gonna argue the obvious here. You were hoping there was a mgical portal through reality and you could save $$$. Just posting 3 different sites, for all the wrong part- and posing it as a 'should I buy the cheaper' seems like a super odd way of asking 'hey, any way to use a part from a differnet model engine?" or "whats up with these BW-to-BMW cross-refernces" But here is a truth- if the only difference is the box..or the label..or clocking a housing...dont you think the market would have figured that out already?!? How do they sell one for $700 and the other at $1700? There would be a company buying the335d version at 700 and selling the relabeled X5 'version' for $800 JMO |

All the wrong part? the 3rd on the list is X535D turbo on FCP, Its $730 not $1700??? I could care less about the price, read this thread and add up the current parts list..... These forums are used to spread knowledge and help each other out, I was really just curious to find out what the difference is between X5 and 335D. Heck maybe someone down the road will have a x5 with a blown HP turbo and they could use their buddies 335D he had sitting around and gotten back on the road, we could have had the answer here, but I guess we'll never know. I just wanted to know the difference between turbos if someone happed to know, I did not ask for your opinion on purchasing parts. Different case but why not buy parts that fit the car? My E90 currently has a AC compressor pulley from a Mercedes with a serpentine belt that's 2" shorter. Optimal? no, but it got the car back on the road within 2 days instead of a week+ waiting for a $350 compressor or a "BMW" pulley that had to shipped from freekin Poland. So things happen, problems can be solved different ways, Thank you for everyone's help ill give a update when the turbo arrives. |

Cool. Only way to make progress is trying. Post back. |
Alright what a nightmare this has become....
So I got the new turbo in got it all back together. Started right up, blow by was down a lot, then she started to smoke like nobody’s business! Come to find out it had also pumped a good quart or so into the exhaust. So removed the exhaust after the SCR got it all cleaned out and reinstalled. Started it up she still smoked but not nearly as bad. Took it for a drive. Took about 5min and w.e residue was left was pretty much gone, exhaust cleared up, it drove well, felt strong just as it did before. Another 5min went by and I noticed a tick, by the time I made it home, it was a heavy knock. Checked the oil and the filter both have metal, so at this point I’m looking at another engine. And I thought everything was going great..... Not sure what happened Ista smoothness test shows cylinder 6 out of range which is the cylinder that got locked with oil. My guess is a bearing must have got damaged and as soon as it made some power again it chewed itself up. So anyone have a M57 laying around? Will 335d engine/longblock swap into the x5? Is there anything I need to be aware of with changing engines? Computer issues? Simple as resetting adaptations? Anything else? |
A m57 out of a 335d will not fit in a X5. The valve cover along with a few other things are different
|
Ok but what about the long block itself, I can certainly swap parts from my x5 over to it.
