Several codes advise please
 

Getting several codes

Troubleshooting so far was to replace 1 of the oxygen sensors that the cat code references.

Could someone advise which code is likely the actual problem? Or where I should start looking.

2a98
2a82

Car has 140,000
Engine is n52. 3.0
2007 x5 3.0

Inspection is due and dealer insist the solution is to give them 4000 to replace both cats...

Also car runs great no noticible issues other than I lose maybe 1 qt of oil every 7-10k.

Oil leak is at the oil pan it's just a slow leak.

Basically once they car says it's low it's time to change the oil anyways

did you look up the codes?


vanos code, camshaft code and 02 sensor code.


I would:


- run a Vanos function test
- remove vanos solenoid and EXTENSIVELY clean it (using 5V to actuate it while cleaning, looking for nice crisp clicks)
- MAYBE replace the camshaft position sensor
- Consider replacing pre-cat 02 sensors, (when were these last done?)


This isnt a 'rifle shot' diagnosis. One or more may not be 'necessary'. But they are $100 tasks, if you can DIY, so why not?

You should do some research on vanos solenoids and actuation...how to test them...the relationship between camshaft position control and cam sensor codes.


An issue with either of these could lead to a chrinically rich running car- which can overwhelm and foul the cats and O2s.


Fix the underlying issue and the rest can resolve.

so as expected, BMW dealer failed emissions and handed me a sheet advising me spend 5k with them to replace the cat install sensors, and 900 dollars to install new vanos solenoids (WTF.... 900 dollars to install 2 parts that takes ~20 minutes to swap and cost 300 dollars total to purchase)

I ordered new bosch o2 sensors for the failing bank post and pre, and new vanos solenoids.

Fingers crossed the cat is not bad, that is 1300 dollars plus days of work to install with my limited time.

Id have done both banks

I actually think I probably am going to go back and order the other two do you guys see any issue with me getting the Bosch brand over the BMW branded one over on the e92 platform I've always just used the Bosch brand ones and never had any issues figured it would work out about the same on the n52 engine

Depends on where you purchase them. There have been counterfeit sensors sold on legitimate sites.
