Brake job at 96k miles!
Just replaced the front rotors/pads (new retention clips as well). Impressed that the stock brakes lasted basically 100k miles. There was still life in the pads but the rotors has developed a "shimmy" while braking. Stayed OE with genuine BMW brakes. Going to replace the rears next and flush the fluid. Debating whether to replace the rear rotors. They are fine, but my OCD may not let me leave the old ones on. Rusted hats and all...

DO you think the rear rotors will be good to 200k?? (If you got 96k so far, and you DONT replace the rotors, the next time you do pads will be another 96k...)
And you are spenidng the $$$ for OE rotors? IMO metal is metal, but whatever. BMW is getting them from the same place. In terms of 'shimmy'... are the front tension strut (aka lower control arm) bushes original? |

So the fronts went 96k...but the rears were previously replaced?? You own that since day one?

No, sorry. Tried to answer point by point, but did not work so well. Was trying to say the tension struts were replaced. Brakes are all original.
Going to replace the rear rotors... Might as well do it right while I am in there. |
Wanted to update, replaced the rear pads/rotors and flushed the brake fluid. Found out that the pads were in fact, Akebono's. So that means they were replaced in the first 25k miles which is when I purchased the vehicle. Front pads must have been as well, just didn't notice.
For those that are wondering, as I was. The rear parking brake was the old style drum brake on the inside of the rotor. So no special tools, computer or methods were required. If you are experienced with that "old" style of parking brake set up than you will be good to go. |
Thanks for the update.
You purchased w 25k miles? And someone had already been out of warranty and replaced them w Akebonos? 25k or 125k? !!! I assume you've checked mileage, records, BMW history and nothing odd? Just spitballing. |
I assume they replaced them early on because of brake dust. That seems to be the driving factor for a lot of people.
I did check the records. Nothing on the official record. It was done privately. The car was not out of warranty. Still had remaining factory warranty. |
