panoramic sunroof

So I was driving along the freeway at normal speeds when my sunroof exploded. It was like a shotgun went off and the glass was everywhere. The car is a 2012 X5d with 85k on on the clock.
Has anyone experienced this? I did read that there was a class action lawsuit against BMW. https://www.carcomplaints.com/news/2...-lawsuit.shtml It's a bit chilly in WA state but not cold, plus the car has been in colder climates so I don't think it's temperature related. I'm pretty convinced that nothing struck the car. Hopefully my insurance will cover it. Any advice appreciated. My wife said if she had been driving she would of crashed. |

So, rather than losing my $500 insurance deductible I purchased new glass on ebay; this only cost $200.
Replacing the glass was super easy and only required removing 2 gaiters and 6 small screws. You need to tilt the sunroof to gain access to the screws. The hardest part was removing all the glass fragments from the sunroof mechanism. Don;t be afraid to do this yourself if you have too. It really is easy. It might take a bit of jiggling for alignment, but not difficult. |
Agreed. Very easy diy. Just did mine (a few times) on an e61 wagon during suede headliner wrap job. Rebuilding a pano roof is tough. Replacing glass is a simple affair. Smart move saving the deductible.
