Delete all paired devices from your I-drive. Then reconnect whatever you actively use. Sometimes this fixes the SOS failure malfunction you are talking about.

I joined and paid the subscription fee just to thank you for this suggestion. After months of getting the SOS error, I tried to fix it by using the Fiber loop connector to troubleshoot and tearing apart the car and dash to figure this out. It did not cross my mind that this was the issue. I was even going to pay someone $365 USD to code out the SOS error. This solution worked for me but this is how I came to the conclusion of doing this ... The key is to make sure that any paired devices are out of range OR the bluetooth is turned off on any paired phone(s) before attempting to delete the paired device from the BMW BT list. If not, BT will never engage and it gets stuck in search mode while also getting the SOS error and also disabling the AUX audio input.
My assumption of what is going on is that the BMW BT module has an issue trying to negotiate BT protocol with multiple newer phones, like a pari of Iphone 12s in my case. It could be that a software update cures this but I am not sure. In my case, the SOS error shows up again if I try to add a 2nd Iphone 12 to the system. If both phones are in the area when trying to negotiate a BT connection, it gets stuck in a software loop until an SOS error pops up.
My solution, until i understand how to code out the SOS error, was to delete the BT pairing from the BMW BT and to forget the BT connection from my iphone. Recycle the car and start the pairing process again.
If someone else can add to this on why a 2nd iphone 12 cannot be added to the system, please let me know.
