Ac issue
Hey just recently got a 2012 35i with ~80k miles and it has been great but out of nowhere the ac started blowing hot. From what I can tell the clutch isn’t kicking on, I was going to just run 12v to it but wasn’t too sure. I only have a ac recharge from autozone for a gauge and it’s showing 90psi on low side as of right now. Any help would be great

take it to a proper AC shop, have them do a evacuate, leak, and recharge to the correct weight of freon. They should also add dye trace. DO NOT USE AN AUTOZONE RECHARGE KIT.
You are 'just gonna run 12V to it'???!?! What a hack. Fix it, dont ruin it. www.newtis.info |
Ard is right - be very careful with the way that guys on youtube by just ‘adding freon’ - you can easily damage the compressor by overcharging if you do it with little or no thought about how the system is designed. Also, there are 2 different compressors in the BMWs I know - clutchless and clutched. You cant just run 12V to the coil and hope everything fans out - these systems are complex and if it just stopped working there is a reason....

I meant running the 12v to see if the compressor kicks on and clutch engaged, I also had a question about if it’s safe to do a brief 12v to the pressure switch to rule that out, I’m not fully amateur I’m just new to this platform. Have fully rebuilt e39s and my current e90

dont run voltage to anything. Use a meter to troubleshoot.
If you know how the circuit works. you should be able to place a meter on points in the circuti and determine if it is working properly. Did you notice the BMW service manual link I prvided? Might have already seen it, but it should give you everything you need |
your ac compressor is probably shot. mine went out last month, scan tool shows a passenger jbe compressor error. for what its worth, i would get a new idler pulley and belt if your replacing, cheap and easy prevention maintenance.

this is my first car that an ac compressor has went out... then again, i only drove an average of 5000 miles a year on my old car and its only above freezing 3 months of the year... im attributing it to just my luck
