There was also an advisory which were the front pads and discs (rotors) as they were found to be coming close to their sell by date. These have been replaced as it was a case of do them now rather than having to return again in a few weeks time. I also had a full service done, all fluids and filters etc..... hopefully it now has a full bill of heath.
As cars go, this has been one of my better choices. I bought it 3 years ago (well it will be next month), there have been a few issues that have cropped up, but nothing really major, a parking brake issue where the brakes wouldn't release, but the most frightening being the recent clunking, I was so worried that it was going to be the transfer box or something just as expensive, fingers crossed I have got away quite lightly. Other than usual wear and tear service type items, my only other niggle has been the A/C system that has never really worked as it should, but is on the list to be sorted before we head across Europe in the summer (if we are allowed to).
Anyway, hopefully this will be the end of the clunking, if it isn't, then I will let you know. Thank you for all of your input with trying to help me solve my issue.

Feel free to Hi-Jack as much as you want :D:D:D

Glad you got it resolved. E70 isn't discussed as much here as the E53 for
some reason, but I love all the improvements done on this model.

It's modern enough that one doesn't need to look for a replacement anytime soon. The rear view camera, bluetooth streaming, usb mp3 playback, 6 speed transmission, to name a few.

7-8 years newer is the primary reason. As the E70 ages more people will be coming to xo solve their issues. There are things I definitely prefer on my 01 e53s like the purely mechanical always on transfer case. I work on an e90 with a similar TC to the E70 and I don't like the constant shifting of front axle power application. Not to mention a $400 motor to engage the thing. But I can't really imagine switching cars, the X5 picked me I have no interest in a different car really, so my next car will certainly be e70. I had thought I'd have one more e53 namely an 06 as a stepping stone but the 01s keep on trucking and if I can resolve the worn out cats in a cost effective manner I can see holdit onto the 01s for 2-4 more years.

I have had the car back for about 1week now, and although my journeys have been limited due to the Covid lockdown, I have managed to clock up a few miles, and the clunking noise has not been heard, so fingers crossed......

Good news. You can update the thread title with a "solved" so those searching later will know to check their springs. Not a common failure and could easily be overlooked.
