E70 Comfort Access Door Handle Errors
 

My driver door's comfort access isn't working. There's a high battery drain every other day, and the left side of the handle near the connector is warm to the touch.

I read up a diy post on xbimmers.com and decided to try it out tonight:

I swapped the working rear driver's side door handle with the non working driver handle, connected the wire and observed the following:

1. The driver door handle now unlocks when I touch it. But it still doesn't lock when I touch it again.

2. My rear passenger door handle also stopped unlocking by touch now.

The front passenger door handle locks and unlocks by touching the handle.

I unplugged the connector to the defective driver handle which is now on the rear driver side door. I use a dental floss to loosely connect between the door handle wire connector and the wire coming from inside the door so that wire doesn't fall into the bottom of the door after it's been disconnected.

For future purposes, when I am able to source a working comfort access monaco blue door handle again!

I will see in a few days whether the high battery drain has disappeared or not.

Somebody posted about the light not turning off on their passenger door handle. Was the light staying on causing your drain and warmth?

All 4 courtesy light turns off at the same time so That’s not where it’s drawing power.

So it’s probably not the light. The handle is not a serviceable item because the wire is embedded in a clear layer of glue.

Besides this I also have an EDC error that comes on 5-10 minutes after starting the engine.

The code scanner reads an error code of: 6310 VDM signal, front right ride height sensor.

I just had the front right axle replaced, wondering if this could be the cause？

The car does ride worse after the error pops up.

Check your level sensor arm. It's pretty regular a thread covers the arm getting into the wrong position typically after some service. The lever from the sensor should be mostly horizontal and the arm to the wishbone should be mostly vertical. If they are oposity you'll get the error and likely the symptoms you describe.

Thanks andrew. I'll attempt to look for the sensor when the sun warms the concrete floor tomorrow.

We don't get snow here but it's still pretty chilly most of the day.

I only hope the sensor isn't covered by the plastic covering in the wheel arch.

On the comfort access handle, the rear driver side handle that I moved to the driver side has failed after working for exactly 2 days.

The only one working now is the front passenger handle.

The sensors in these handles are really troublesome and fragile!

The level sensor is attached to the wishbone and can be fixed laying on your back with the car on the ground (wife's has a broken elbow joint and falls apart regularly). I have the new part but it takes a little more work to install vs. put back together. Removing the wheel gives plenty of access though

Need to be careful with those CAS handles. On my previous E70; while at the dealership diagnosing the electrical issue, they short-circuited and melted and almost caused a fire.

Reporting back on what I found after removing the front passenger tire:

The top of level sensor's arm is detached from the metal ball that is attached to the wishbone per your post.

It was very hard to put back, I had to clamp down with a wrench carefully not to break the fragile looking plastic arm lever.

Once it popped back in I sprayed some liquid wrench on the lever, and the 2 ball joints. I don't want the north winter freeze make the level hard to move freely.

Anyway, super happy it is an easy fix. I will test drive tonight to make sure this solves the EDC error.

The axle on the front passenger side is new. The used car dealer replaced the leaking boot. You can see the bolt is brand new!

The arm is about $10 part; the fix is temporary.

Why is the fix temporary? I assume the mechanic just forgot to plug it back into the joint when he did the axle replacement.
