2007 winter wheels & fitment question
 

I am waiting for my new ride to arrive. My neighbor is selling his X5 and asked me if I wanted his winter wheels. They are from a '02 X5 4.4 with 48mm offset factory original BMW wheels( style 74 I believe). The 2007 X5's are 46mm offset. Will they fit? would there be any issues? I Ordered 4.8i with sport package, dynamic package and 20" wheels.

I'd like to know the answer to this also. Assuming the bolt pattern is the same (5x120 for the E53) and the center hub opening is correct, the main issue would be brake clearance.

The bolt pattern is the same, the standard wheel size is the same 18 x 8.5 with 255/55/18 tires. I don't know about the hub. The brakes are larger, but should this make a difference if the wheel sizes are the same?

...and the TPMS, do they need to be installed also?

The brake clearance involves the three dimentional geometry of the calipers, etc. as well as the disc diameter, so test fitting may be the only practical way to find out if the wheels will work, unless someone knowledgeable at BMW can tell you (like one of their engineers). There are no tire pressure monitors that need to be installed, since the system monitors relative wheel rotations to determine if a tire is low. The wheel offset seems to be negligable.

The e70 uses direct TPMS with a sensor mounted and located inside the wheel which attaches to the valve stem. Manufactured by BERU AG. This is what I was told.

Not true. It's calculated through realitive speed of each wheel rotating.

even on US and Canada cars? I had this info given to me by BMW service here in Canada. I know there is still alot of confusion since the vehicle is so new.

Perhaps I stand corrected, This is from the reference docs.

"Tire Failure Indicator RPA The electronic monitoring system RPA monitors the tire pressure by constantly comparing the wheel speeds (dynamic rolling circumference). A warning lamp informs the driver of any irregularities that occur due to the loss of tire pressure. The system triggers a warning as from a vehicle speed of 25 km/h and at a pressure drop of more
than 30%."

Here's an idea. Ask your dealer if he'll put an e70 on the lift and try one of the wheels in question. Tell him you're concerned about the snow tire issue and you think other potential customers will be too. If customers trading in older X5's can just keep their winter wheels/tires, the dealer has a sales pitch. And besides, your dealer wants to keep you happy since you've already ordered the car. Plus--tell him there are people on X5world who also want to know.
