BMW all the way. Had two X5`s and they and BMW have been great.
Had a 320cdi ML now for twelve months, great car, but MB UK and the dealers are a different story. Had cosmetic and other faults upon delivery and its taken me until now to get MB to admit the problems.
I was about to go to Court with them, but at the last moment, the Mercedes dealer settled out of court.
I will never have another MB.
My new X5 is for 1st March, car`nt wait!

Performance is better on the X5 but only 1 sec on 0-60 so not a huge deal to me and certainly not for the wife...
The ride of the GL is great, off road creds fantastic but useless to me. (drove the car at Brooklands the new Merc showcase dealership and they have an offroad testing ground along with a full track nice!)
Never owned a Merc before and the interior is OK but nowhere near as nice as the X5 is (at least from what I can tell of X5 pictures). The space factor is nonetheless the key plus along with a great ride quality.
Clealry I am going to get BMW biaised views here but nevertheless would love to hear the board thoughts on the 2 cars...

cpd1 If it was me then honestly I would have niether car. Not sure of your budget but if you can push the boat out a bit and go for the

Full Fat Range Rover TDV8 it's a cracking car.:thumbup: Lick the pants of the Merc and BMW anyday.
