I-Drive question
 

While my '05 X is getting the driver's seat replaced, due to the seat heater burning a hole in the leather, I'm driving an '07 335i. The 335 has Nav, so I've been playing around with I-Drive.

Besides the interface being kind of clunky, I notice that it is very slow in executing a command from the controller. For example, switching from Nav to the Entertainment screen, takes a few seconds. Kind of reminds me of the response time of my old Windows 95 setup. Is this normal? I really was hoping to like I-Drive, since I'll have it in the X5 that replaces my '05 in a few months, but in the 335, it sure seems very, very slow.

I assume the X5 I-Drive setup is the same...any comments?

Yup it's normal.....just remember that it is a computer...

Sure it's a computer, but it's 2007! WTF!! That's a poor excuse in this day & age!!!

Sure, there's no excuse, but some are still slower....cough cough Jaguar XK cough cough ;)

I have no issues with i-Drive on the 545

I'm finding that sometimes the idrive is slow, sometimes fast as lightening. Either way, I think it works really well.

Yea, it takes maybe 3 to 5 secs to load a menu IIRC on my 335i tester and on various other 5-series. I don't find that annoying at all.

Think of it this way: during those 3-5 seconds, you can look ahead at the road to check traffic, and then when you divert your eyes back to iDrive, it'll be ready!

im actually curious what is the bottleneck that makes the i drive slow. is it the actual application? not enough memory? slow processor?? well the latter 2 are relatively easy to solve and add 50 bucks for a better memory or processor by bmw to make the i drive faster should be easy. so im guessing the problem is with the application?

I would guess, based on the nav performance in my '05 E53, that BMW cheaped out on the processor. I've been using I-Drive on the 335 for two days now, and the delay in executing commands is really annoying. My business partner & I were out in the 335, and he said that it seemed like it was too much bother to navigate through the menus...Based on the performance of the unit in the 335, I would have to agree.
