2007 4.8i -- one thirsty bimmer!

i took delivery of my 07 x5 4.8 three weeks ago and put 700 miles on it. however, i am on my fourth, if not fifth, tank already. even when i try to drive slower, my average MPG stays around 11. i am not complaining or anything, but has anyone else noticed such crazy fuel consumption? or is it just too new to judge the true MPG?

thanks

I'm not surprised with your observations at all since heavier body and bigger engine will normally equate to lower gas mileage.

But you may see some improvement when you put more miles since you're pretty much still breaking-in the engine at this point.

Just go out and enjoy driving your new X5!

remember there is that breaking period. but you may not see much more of an increase. a powerful car needs some powerful dough to power it

ohh...:worthless:

I hope you guys are breakig in your engines properly. Proper ring seal is very important. During your initial break-in period, you need to load the engine to get the rings to seal properly. ie. go up a hill in a high gear pushing the throttle pretty hard. After the factory recommended break-in period, I would very higly reco changing the oil after break-in.After this, take the engine up to redline many times. This is as important as loading the engine correctly.

I am getting the same type of fuel economy on my 4.8i. Some others have reported a lot better economy, but I cannot see a logical reason for such large variances with the same vehicles.

I'm waiting for the diesel version in the US.

All good info above, and the E70 is even 3-400 lbs heavier
than the V8 E53. These are heavy muthas.

Curious to read real world highway trip mpg after break-in.
Vig, above, is right on with some "load necessary" for
getting the motors cooking.
GL,
mD

PS, not a comparo, but the worst full tank I've ever seen
in 5 years of hauling azz in my Vette, was 23 mpg.
And, that was from 3 days of white knuckle corner and
zooming on the BRPkway.
