3.5 Twin turbo in X5, when?

I want to buy an X5 3.0, but I know that the new 3.5 TT engine will make its way into the X5 eventually, so I would like to wait for it to happen before making my purchase... the problem is; does anyone know when the new engine will make it into the X5? i have heard that the 535 and X3 may get it this year as the 2008 model year, but what about the X5??

:wavey::xoutpost::wavey:

it's not acutally a 3.5 liter engine

you can expect it for 2008, but don't hold your breath. one year into the new e90, they switched the engine. they may do the same with the e70

I thought they changed the engine from 330 to 335 after two years on the sedan right?

Any idea when we will find out for sure what engines will be avalsble for 2008?

After a year and a half. The 3 sedan began its 2006 model year in March versus July/August for new MY's...

The 535i is already confirmed for 2008. The E60 refresh is an early MY designation too (starting in April/may 07' for the 2008's). I think the earliest that we will see the 3.5i engine in the X5 is for the 09' model year - so middle of 08...

Either that, or the 3.5i engine will make its appearance when BMW puts the diesel engines into the E70 for the 08 model year... I guess we'll just have to wait and see...

yes. it is called the 335. but it still uses a 3.0 liter engine. the extra 5 is to denote the difference between the 255-hp 3.0 330i and the 300-hp 3.0 335i

it's like the s in 3.0si to distinguish between the 225-hp 3.0 3.0i and the 260-hp 3.0 3.0si

currently everything I-6 is a 3.0 engine (325, 328, 330, 335)

Wondering whether the X5 3.5si will be introduced together with the high performance "is" model in early 08?

:iagree: except for the ///M. Still I-6 but not 3.0.

Not soon IMO, they cant make 335i Coupes fast enough, I ordered one Dec 21 and I should get it on the 5th of next month, the 535 just got released and they have delayed new 335i orders for 3 months. They need to get engine production up before they add that to more vehicles. 2009 is my guess.

any word on the price of that?

Wagner 03-23-2007 04:46 PM

I don't think the TT motor will go in the X5. Doesn't make sense to me (of course I'm no automobile expert). The V8 used now produces more power and is used throughout the BMW lineup. IMO you will see the diesel X5 in the states long before a TT one. The TT motor makes less horsepower and less torque, what would be the point? Unless your thought is BMW will replace all I6's with the TT.

Didn't hear anything on price. BMW needs to step up to the plate quickly though if they want to compete with the MB AMG ML and Porsche TT-S.

So why did they put it in the 5 series? That series has a V8 as well. I'm betting it will show up in the next year or so. The 3.0 is underpowered for the highway (in my opinion).

Less weight than the V8, less internal friction, better fuel economy, and the twin turbo design allows for the power only when it is required, meaning that in the real world the fuel economy gain is even higher.

I don't think that the 3.0 is underpowered, but with all the current focus on more power, the twin turbo makes more sense than a V8.

I agree that the 3.0 twin turbo gasoline engine will show up in the X series, likely the X3 as well as the X5. The V8 won't fit in the X3, and the abundance of torque at low revs suits the heavier vehicles very well.

I wonder how they're going to handle the I6-tt and V8 in models that use both those engines. There really won't be any incentive to get the V8, unless they seriously bump it's power as well.

There is a serious increase in power between the 2 units, don't you think. I believe the TT has 300HP and the 4.8 has 350HP. The 4.8 can easily be upgraded as the 550 has 360HP. I would think a 60HP difference would be significant to most.

On a related topic, a 3.5TT would be perfect in Canada (not that BMW cares much about this market as compared to the USA). The recent federal budget means that a 3.0 will not attract a gas guzzler tax, while the 4.8 will attract a $1,000 tax (based on BMW's published consumption ratings). The TT might just make it under the 13l/100KM line and avoid the tax.

LeMansX5 03-24-2007 10:36 AM

X6(coming in early 2008) has bi-turbo V8 and it will eventually move to X5 as well.
Right now BMW is concentrating on having the BER and "Stop & Go" features available across all model line-up as part of "BMW efficient dynamics" campaign. 3-series will get that feature in fall this year with new HPI I4 and I6 engines.

TRAINER 03-24-2007 08:02 PM

That's what I'm talking about!

As of now, there is no way to get any decent gains from BMW's 4.8. Who cares about a 60hp peak difference. The 3.0 twin turbo rules as far what really counts..the curve. If the current 4.8 is up against the 3.0tt, it doesn't have any advantage whatsoever when you consider it's very very marginal output advantage and worse fuel economy. Factor in the extra cost, and the 3.0tt X5 would win no questions asked.
