While paddle shifts would be nice, the reason I'm waiting for MY08 is my hope that most of the BUGS will be worked out. I don't feel like spending $73K to be a test rat! Nor do I enjoy spending my free time @ the stealers shop and driving a $40K loaner.

So far between this forum & bimmerfest (and these forums represent only a fraction of E70 owners) I've read about the following problems:

Transmission Issues - MANY POST ON THIS ONE
I-Drive crash due to fried amplifier
Other misc. I-Drive issues
Cupping of front tires on 20"s
Problem with Throttle Potentiometer
Sunroof replaced due to?
Loss of RTTI data
Excessive Oil loss
Leak in WS washer line

I can see why you are waiting.....
I haven't had a single issue since I have gotten the car.

You're just one of over 15,000 E70 owners, and a lucky one at that. Just puruse this forum and bimmerfest and you'll find many not so lucky E70 owners with theirs in the shop numorous times.

This is not limited to the first year of the E70. The 335, and just about every 1st year BMW has had many problems. Sad, but true. BMW uses its customers as its new vehicle test department.

It's killing me to wait, but the E70 will be my daily driver and I don't want a car I can't depend on.

one of the reason for waitng for the 08 was hopefully they upgrade the engine for 3.0, didnt wanted to get shaft again like the 330 becoming 335

Question worth thinking about - if you had a car with no problems, are you likely go to on a forum to tell people you have no problems and love your car? Or are you more likely to do so only to report problems and look for answers and see if others are experiencing the same problems?

I have had cars with no problems, and did in fact post in forums. My posts weren't specific to not having problems, rather, they were about tips, tricks, mods, etc.

Sadly, however, my X5 does not fall into that category. In the past 24 days (the first 24 days of ownership), it has been in the shop for eleven of those days, representing two trips. In both cases, the crux of the issue was a recurring engine light. (Both times, the claim is that it is an oxygen sensor.) Mixed in that, however, are software upgrades that don't work out---necessitating longer stays in the shop.


Though I like the vehicle, I've never had a vehicle with this poor of a record. I have two other cars that have never been in the shop for anything other than scheduled maintenance. (Toyotas)

I have a real issue being handed a $20,000 Camry as my $70,000 X5 is in the dealer's hands. BMW should step up their quality control on their vehicles. It isn't an "ultimate driving machine" when it is in the shop, and thus, not able to be driven.

I don't mean that no-one would post positive things, plenty of people on here do, probably as much or more than they do post problems... but I'm willing to bet there are more people who aren't on forums at all because it wouldn't occur to them unless they had problems and needed information or wanted to vent. Point being, the problems are most likely experienced by the minority. The real question, I guess, is how large is that minority.

My E70 is on order and I'm not looking forward to any of the problems being reported on here, hopefully won't experience them, and hopefully will not regret getting it now when I could've waited.

That's a good question. Statistically, I'm sure that people will post more about problems. This can be rooted in a few different categories: "Is this normal?" "Hey watch out!" and "Misery loves company."

I hope you don't have issues either. I wouldn't want anyone to plunk down a large chunk of money on something, only to lose the "joy of ownership" to the headaches of having to get things fixed all of the time.

Unfortunately for me, I didn't read about the X5 until after I'd purchased it. If I had, I would have waited a year. When comparing this to other car forums I've been on (non-BMW), there is an appearance that there are more complaints than I've seen on the others.

But, alas, I have purchased the car. Now it's time to deal with the issues. There is a large part of me that is hoping that these things (which in my case are relatively minor) are things that will be resolved---and I can go on my way. But there is also the fear that I will experience the transmission issues, oil issue, etc.
