Well, i'm "lucky" enough to be living in Norway, and the car prices here are ridicolous, listen to this.
A new X5 3.0D, cost from 120.000.- Euro's.
In USD it's apr 155.000.-

the import duties for used cars are also the same, at 116%.

cars that attract some sort of import duty come in two flavours

a) CBU - completely built units
b) CKD - cars that are assembled in india from imported parts

The bmw x5, a CBU, from South carolina i presume, attracts a 116% duty, however, a locally assembled car like the mercedes S350L will only have about a 75/80% import duty, thus only costing about 176,000 usd. the same s350l fully imported would not be less than 220,000 usd

also the road conditions are so appaling in this country that the dealer said not to have anything larger than 19'' rims or ride comfort would diminish.

india still has a long way to go!

Now I can see how poor countries have to charge huge tariffs to their rich citizens to pay for social services, but for God's sake, you guys have as much oil as some Middle East countries and yet you still tack on those huge taxes??? I don't get it.

Based on what I've seen of the roads here in Mumbai (I'm at the Taj hotel now on an overnight), I don't think I'd want to drive an X5 on these roads.. those darn tu-tu's are like gnats buzzing around!
