I also remember reading in a trade magazine, some years ago, a toutorial on managing customers. The Guru was a BMW auto manager.

The drill included as best I recall.

1. Seeing the problem customer by appointment only.

2. Then making the customer wait a long time in the austere waiting room.

3. Begining by asking the customer, as if he were explaining to a small child, that this was a $30.000 or $40, 000 automobile and implying or even outright asking the customer if they could afford such a car.

4. Making the customer justify that he was even worthy own such a car.

5. Telling the customer that, if he couldn't afford the car, he shouldn't have bought it or even come in and wasted the dealer's time. In short, he was out of his league.

Since I wrote a check for mine, I think he would have a hard time making that stick.. with me at least. But I'd love to see him try.

I guess it's true what they say - American's don't get sarcasm!! That article is clearly meant as a joke :)

I didn't experience this at any of the dealers I've visted for sales or service. I believe that the advent of the Internet has taken a lot of leverage away from dealers. (Lots of good information sharing.)

The flaw in the "attitude" shown is that one can be extremely wealthy, but still demand good value and good service. Warrent Buffet only recently bought a new Cadillac--after owning another car for quite awhile. (I read this somewhere recently, I think.) Point is, the size of one's wallet does not mean that s/he is predisposed to behave a certain way.

Funny reading. I live on the East Coast and it takes me back to when I was 21 years old and went to visit my cousin in Cali for the first time. I was at the Sherman Oaks Mall and there was an exotic used car dealer down the road so me and a buddy, dressed in our best brat ware (cut off shirts, flip flops and bathing suits), stopped in to peak around. A salesman immediately walked out into the lot and saw me gawking at a Porsche Slantnose Turbo that I soon learned to be Eric Dickerson's (of LA Rams fame) old ride. The salesman threw me the keys and said I could take it out for a ride I almost sh*t myself. Needless to say I nervously gave him the keys back and said I was just looking around...Algar Ferrari (Bryn Mawr, PA) back then was just down the street from my parent's house and when I would look around their lot they would come out and instead of tossing me keys they would just about tell me to get the fu*k off the property. Needless to say the Porsche experience and salesman in the Valley left a very favorable impression on me of southern Cali.
