Chrome Exhaust Tips for a E70 3.0si ???

Has anyone changed the standard dull looking black exhaust tips of the 3.0si to the chrome tips ??? If yes, who has the best deals on the net on these puppies with a BMWCCA discount ?

Thanks,

I myself are looking at changing the factory exhaust tips for the E70 3.0. Does anybody know if I can fit the large 4.8 E70 tips into the 3.0? I just love that look.

Appreciate the input.

Alex Bidarian 07-17-2007 04:11 PM

I checked with a couple of dealers. You cannot :-(

I guess you cannot put the factory OEM chrome tips on the 3.0si from the 4.8i. I am sure you can buy some aftermarket ones and put them on, but not the OEM ones from the 4.8i.

Good luck. I just ordered the same ones as the black X5 3.0 above from a New Jersey dealer for a $100 + shipping.

That sucks. I guess I have to look around for the aftermarket one's. If not I'll do the same chrome tips that you're getting.

Thanks.

The reason you can not get the E70 4.8 tips is because they are part of the muffler and for a set it will run you about $600 USD.

Here is the next best thing. You can purchase the E53 (X5) 4.6/4.8is tips...they are very similar to the E70 4.8 tips and are OEM...you can order them from the board sponcer Morristown BMW for $220 (set).

...Or if you want to spend even less, then just get the aftermarket ones like some of the people on this board already did from e-bay for $110.

through my research this is the best you can do...unless you find a totaled E70 4.8 at your local junk yard purchase the rear mufflers with the exhous and cut the tips off then have them welded....

That's correct. I prefer the square looking one. I'll probably go for the E53 4.6 OEM tips.

Thanks for the info.

BTW, Watrob's tips looks pretty good also.

Called BMW dealer, E53 4.6is/4.8is tips don't fit E70 3.0si tips !

I just called a couple of local BMW dealers and asked if the E53 4.6is/4.8is chrome tips fit the E70 3.0si muffler ends, and they said NO. It does NOT fit it. You would have to go an aftermarket chrome set to get a square chrome tip for the E70 3.0si.

Can you guys verify through your sources if this information is correct or not ???

Thanks.

Good news !!! The E70 4.8i chrome exhaust tips DO fit the 3.0si !

I just came from Crevier BMW in Santa Ana, California today at lunch. I went to their parts department and asked a specialist there if the tips of the 4.8i could fit into the 3.0si. After looking at both cars' exhaust tips and measuring the diameter (well, eyeballing is more like it), he said that the 4.8i chrome tips WOULD fit the 3.0si's. The only thing you have to do is to pop the extra plastic piece out of the rear bumper and they fit.

I hope I have not been given wrong info. So if I am wrong, please do not shoot the messenger !!!

Thanks Alex. I will also check at my local dealership here in Valencia and see what they say. I was at Glendale BMW earlier today and one of the guys there told me it should also fit but they did not really do any measurement. You're lucky you're out there in OC. It's going to be super hot out here the next few days so we're spending the weekend at Newport Beach and kick back.

jamesboags 07-20-2007 03:33 AM

The exhaust diameter on the 3.0 is 70mm I believe ...

X5JDX,

Are these from a 3 series 335i and they are just plugged over the standard tips?
Thx

Pretty sure that they are specific to the E70, the cut matches the rear profile perfectly.

I will post the part number and price here soon (don't have the spec sheet to hand just now).

BTW: I was hoping that the dealer was going to fit the 4.8 squarer tips, but to be honest the round ones look pretty good and I don't have to go hacking and welding a brand new car. The price of the round tips was very reasonable.

cpd1 07-22-2007 02:29 PM

Thanks X5JDX, I also prefer the round ones vs the 4.8, and they look like a very easy fit too. They do look great. Any moreinfo/part numbers greatly appreciated.
thanks

The french dealers indicate that it is not possible to go up the tips of E53 4.6 nor those of the E70 4.4.

The assembly of these last ones requires adaptations of the existing exits and thus pulls the loss of the guarantee manufacturer in case of problem of the system of escape.

Part #'s anyone , anyone, anyone ? Bueller , Bueller ?

Hartge has really nice looking tips, only the price is bit steep. 815 euros at Hartge dealer in Finland... Haven't asked directly from Harge though.

4.8i tips for 3.0i and 3.0d

"alex bidarian" or anyone out there..??

This idea that you can't just buy 4.8i tips and put it on a 3.0i or disesel is what I've been told by aussie dealers/parts department too...(they've told me the tips dont have a part no. they came with the muffler already

though has anyone heard of any bmw stores (online) or e-bay that have identical 4.8 replicas...or any companies that produce exhaust tips for european cars (esp replicas of certain models)

sersiouly the round ones are just too round, the (E53) 4.6is/4.8is are too flat, the 4.8i (e70) are the best....are we sure that no one anywhere has caught these somehow, somewhere....

Help people....

thanks

I just took delivery of my 3.0si last week and looking at the back, the tips are chrome/silver and not black. The diameter is pretty thick already. Do the chrome tips slip over? Or does te 3.0si Sport/Prem package already include the tips? Sorry for the n00bie observation/question! :-)

also..... it seems like changing them to the wider ones will require some sort of modification/cutting of the stock rear fender to make room..

can you confirm???

They do but BMW does not sell just the tips by themselves, you must buy the whole exhaust, however, the Hartge are the ones to get for either the 3.0i or the 3.0D

The factory tips on the 3.0si are stainless steel (as opposed to chrome). They don't have as thick a 'lip' as the chrome ones. . .which I might add are an excellent find.

I had a look at the Hartge site and am I correct in that the tips would actually need to be welded and not just attached over the stock pipes?

yes, as simple as is, everything we get from ACS, Hamman, Hartge, Supersprint as far as mufflers is weld in, only ACS tips are bolt on.

elvism 09-08-2007 03:41 PM

does welding on tips have any effect on warranty?

My dealer said it will affect the warranty and I have to remove it when I turn in the car after the lease is up.

He is checking with the Service Director to confirm.

If this is the case, I will have to go with the slip on round chrome tips.

golfer4life 09-10-2007 07:05 PM

Welding the tips will void warranty

I just confirmed from my SA that welding the 4.8 exhaust tips will void the warranty on the muffler system. I guess I'm out for the Hartge tips. I'm going for the slip on chrome tips like James'.

jamesboags 09-10-2007 07:20 PM

Let us know how this goes. I'd be interesting in seeing how they look installed. Is it relatively easy to pop out the extra piece of the bumper to fit the larger tips?

Hartge does not sell the tips alone. They are sold with the performance mufflers for the E70 X5. They currently only list muffler systems for the X5 3.0d Diesel model. They do not yet have any exhaust systems for the gasoline engines

Here is a pic of an exhaust system and rear apron by Hamann. Looks good!

X5fwc 09-12-2007 01:46 PM

Hartge does have tailpipes for 3.0 diesel engine. Haven't checked how much different the exhaust is but i bet you can fit these for 3.0si exhaust also. Part number is 18 70 0310 G and costs in Finland no less than 815 euros ;-) AC Schnitzer also has tailpipes which are bolt on. Price 915 euros... But they look good though

celm,

Did you just screw those on or did you get them welded on? Any chance you can take a pic from the side? From your pic they seem to stick out quite a bit.

drod 10-01-2007 09:53 PM

it seems like they will stick out regardless....measurements say about 9inches long!!

any chance they can be cut down a bit??

are they bolt on or welded?

HOiYA 10-02-2007 12:11 PM

Thanks. I ended up ordering the OEM tips for the 3.0 from Morristown.

drod 10-05-2007 11:08 PM

does anyone know what the maximum supported length is available when swapping out the stock 3.0si tips?

there are many universal fit chrome tips available but some are 9inches total length and some upto 12inches long!!

also, what is the inlet size needed? 2.25, 2.5, 3.0inch??

I want to order a dual exhaust tip for the 3.0 (one inlet, two outlet) but I'm concerned about it sticking way out...

I went to two muffler shops today and both of them said they won't touch it. They said the maximum to consider is 5 inches total and 2.5 inlet - but preferable smaller. They didnt have any and weren't interested in the job... one place said "your car is too nice to mess with"

drod 10-14-2007 08:30 PM

came across a few other options that may meet those requirements...

sizes and length seem to fit...

worth looking into...

thanks for the research on tips... what was the sizes and length were looking for here???? which on you going for???

drod 10-15-2007 06:55 PM

I'm going to contact all of them to get specs...

from the sound of it, it looks like we're looking for an inlet of 2.5 inches and no more than 5 inch total length on the tips to give it that stock look.

I like the dual tip design...

some will require welding but there are a few that are bolt-ons...

if you there are other options out there please join in!!;)

I paid +- 800 euros for the exhausts.
I fitted them myself with our mechanic otherwise you'll have to pay the work to put them on, don't know how much that costs.
It took us +- 3 hours to put them on.

Does the Hartge exhaust void your BMW warranty in any way?

My dealer said that the word is BMW are due to release some new bolt on tips for the 3.0 petrol and deisel similar to the 4.8 tips, but he could not give me any more info so not holding my breath

I checked with my dealer and he doesn't see any problem with it as it's an approved and well tested (by TUV Germany) part. It also comes with a whole set of documents that states that it's specially designed for this car.
In fact my BMW dealer is the main importer for Hartge in Belgium and he delivered me the exhausts.
I can imagine if you buy tips that are not designed for this car and you try to modify the exhaust that this will void the warranty but otherwise I can't see any problem.

X5falcon 10-23-2007 10:01 AM

Another alternative is, get the original '08 3.0si chrome exahust (circular, not oval). I looked at them from beneath the car this weekend (I see my car under the sun only during the weekends, because I work like a slave....), and they seem to be inserted into the stainless steel exhaust like.. uhm... condoms..... he he...

It does not look as good as 4.8i's oval ones, but definitely lot better than the stainless steel ones. I still do not have the picture....

Thanks for the info. I have been considering the same tips. Just wanted know if i'm getting ripped off. Asking price here in Finland is 812 euros, so it's close enough for me.
The tips look really good on your car.

kyhaynes 11-08-2007 04:00 PM

Does anyone have any exhaust pics or updates for the 3.0si? I notice that most of the aftermarket tips are for the 3.0 diesel version, i.e . Hartge, Hamman. Someone PLEASE HELP!

drod 01-16-2008 12:15 PM

any notes on proper removal of rear bumper...

i have AC Schnitzer exhaust tips i want to install but i may need to have the stock tip cut off an inch.... there isn't much clearance to cut around without touching the bumper/plastic area...and i don't want to scratch it or risk damaging it...

does anyone have documentation on removal???

proveg 01-16-2008 01:00 PM

On the home page there are instructions on the E53 bumper removal, I imagine they might be similar to the E70, sorry searched all over, but havent found any specific instructions. the E70 Trailer hitch instrucitons include info about removing bumper but nothing detailed enough, but could be your starting point.
Please let us know how it turns out, can you for now attach tips without cutting pipes and show us some pics?
Thanks.

i was more concerned about the PDC sensors on the bumpers.. not sure how they are affected when removing the rear bumper...

just wanted to know if there were any hidden connectors that needed to be removed..

i also plan on attaching the bolt-on tips without cutting anything this weekend just to see how they look... the tips are shortest i've found...(6.25inches long) and believe me i've been searching for months.....

but just from the looks of it, they will stick out a couple of inches...

jayo 01-16-2008 01:47 PM

Another member explained how he fitted a Euro tow bar to his E70 which required the removal of the bumper

That's ridiculous! How can installing end pipes affect the warranty on the muffler ? It is just a tube you are installing !

+1. Your SA is telling you BS. I had Hartge exhaust tips installed on my 6 series, I had AC Schnitzer exhaust tips installed on my 7 series. Hell, I have an Eisenmann Sport exhaust installed on my M6 and never did my SA tell me warranty would be void.

He may be talking differently if he would be selling the Hartge exhaust tips. If you like them just go get them. They look great.

Drod, I checked with 3 dealers in my area and they all advised me that it will void the warranty on the muffler system if I have the tips welded. Again, these are U.S. dealers in my area (Southern California).

It won't hurt to check with your local dealer. They might say something different.

you're right about voiding warranty if you weld...but there aren't any bolt-ons available in the market today... believe me i've tried them all...

they are either too big (requiring welding) or too small (requiring welding) and they all require cutting off some of the stock exhaust excess to make them flush or "matchable" to the rear bumper...

and because i've tried every imaginable exhaust tip... i am now looking into full or cat-back exhaust systems...some of them i'm actually testing..

not too concerned about exhaust system warranty.... and parts warranty will come from the exhaust manufacturer...

golfer4life 02-19-2008 05:59 PM

Agreed. Come to think of it, I can't recall ever a time where I had problems with the muffler system on any of the cars I owned, specially I never kept them for more than 5 years. So I should be okay with the welded tips and not worry about voiding the warranty. A couple of local muffler shops quoted me $80 dollars a piece to weld on a 4.8 style tip. I'm in no rush since my dealer gave me a free set of the rounded OEM stainless tips.

Do keep us posted on what type of set up you'll end up getting.

In terms of aesthetics, I think you made the right choice in changing to the original 4.8 tips. Out of curiosity were the 4.8 tips supplied and fitting by your BMW dealer?

That’s the look I hope to achieve with an M-Sport come June. Cheers for the comparison picture Futureman.

ekelly 05-16-2008 12:56 PM

The price of the 4.8i exhaust tips including the cost of fitting them is roughly €1000:yikes:, quotation from local dealer.

As much as I like the look, it’s a little to dear for me.

eKelly, does that mean that your dealer has secret sources in BMW...or are the 4.8 tips now available (ie they have a part #)

Do you have this part #, if it exists, can you dealer give this to you, and you can share it with the rest of us...?

Also..do you have larger pics of your car...the avatar looks great...but too small...what style wheels are they....128??

Hi ozx5

No, not at all. My local dealership is just your average run of the mill BMW garage. In order to get hold of the OEM 4.8i exhaust tips you have to order the complete rear silencer (Part # - 18 10 7 558 646). My dealer had no problem ordering it and spot welding the 4.8i tips on but it was quite pricey.

Yeah my wheels are the Spider Spoke 128’s. If you want any more just let me know.

Kind Regards
ekelly
