And lose cd compatibility ? I would say you'll be able to upgrade if you have the premium sound... probably a software update as well.. which will be costly...

Any suggestions?

If this is a "Multimedia Changer" as they call it then it should be able to play CD's as well. Even normal DVD players and DVD changers can play CD's, so if yours isn't playing CD's there may be something wrong with the hardware and/or software:dunno: .

It's not one of those weird changers that you have to put in the disks upside down (label side down), is it?

Front DVD players are illegal...at last check (LOL). Interesting thing is if ...and BIG if...you ever get into an accident and the Insurance company finds out that DVD was being played in front...that could get ugly. So...just think twice...

The DVD is more likely conected to the shifter or speed sensor. It will "kill" the DVD when car is shifted into drive or "kill" when car exceeds 10km/h or lower speed. Of course there is probably a hack for this.

Went to go pick up my new E70 (that had been lost in TX for the last 2 months) today that was to replace my buyback E70... and it was damaged! Grrr!

Good news is that there is a 08 arriving Thursday that has Premium Sound (6 disc DVD changer) and Rear Seat Entertainment options. So, I should be able to test the functionality soon.

Cool
Have you picked it up yet? Were you able to test and see if movies played on the DVD Changer are also displayed on the back screen?

The vehicle was scheduled to be on the ground at my dealer 10/25. As of this morning it still is not there. As soon as it arrives I will test.

You can watch movies on the screen while driving. What you need to do is to switch out the video chip with a european one. In european model you can watch the movie on the screen. Here in the USA, it's against the law to have video in the front passenger. I know a couple of my friends have done it and it worked. The dealership will not do it because of liability issues.

Will the dealership at least get you the European chip? Where do you get it otherwise? And does this change/screw up anything for those systems which are intended for use in the US? Thanks

To the best of my knowledge there is no such thing as the "European Chip", and even in Europe the TV picture is only visible until a speed of 3km/h or 2mph. In certain markets the hand brake has to be engaged for the TV picture to appear. You can see in the pictures that I've posted below from both the UK and German E60 owners manual that this is the case in both of those European countries.

The only way that I know of to see the TV picture while the car is in motion is to buy and install 3rd party modules. Five years ago I bought the oem BMW European TV tuner for my wife's E53 X5 along with a 3rd party video in motion module that plugged inline to the bus which allows the video to be displayed while the car is in motion. Dominic from TVandNav2Go.com posted in the following post that they have these modules for the E60/E90 and he feels that they would also work for the E70.
