I agree with the above comments about the X5 not being an off-road vehicle. Clarkson is really grasping at staws to bring that up as a criticism.

Granted. It all depends on what bias he brings to the article/clip. I'm actually not a real big fan of that guy, the cars he rides..sure :)

Like I said..he honestly compared a $42K 300 SRT to a $95K M5......not the brightest bulb.

As in the other post....don't take him seriously. He's a hybrid car journalist/ comedian. You only have to see him present Top gear on TV to see that. Helps him sell his books and DVD's.

While I agree that Clarkson should get over it when he equates 4x4 = off-road vehicle, he does have a point.

From his point of view: If you just want something to take your kids to school with and haul cargo, buy a sports wagon. If you want a high driving position, there are cheaper SUVs out there. If you want to go off road, well obviously you can just go buy a Land Rover. And what's the matter with a minivan? Those things haul lots of stuff AND provide a decent driving position.

As far as I can remember he has never seen a BMW that he liked. As a matter of fact he always makes sure to go out of his way to bash BMW.........so keep that in mind when you read or watch him on Top Gear.

That is not really true - he likes the M5 and M6 - he has reviewed them both for his DVDs and for Top Gear - should be no shortage of the clips on youtube.

In general I think people give him a lot less respect than they should. His view of motoring is about the X-factor, as he calls it. If Clarkson was to leave a legacy behind (besides his hilarious grumpy rants) it would be to drive cars that excite you!

Him ranting about a car instead of just ignoring it is not a bad thing. It means it is exciting him - which is what it is all about. I, personnaly, hate mustangs and corvettes - but i would rather be caught dead in either of those than alive in VW Jetta or a minivan. Twisted logic, but there is a point in there :)

Edited for typo

It's fashionable in the UK to bash the American car industry and Jeremy gets more attention with controversial statements. While he has some points I think we can rest assured that the X5 suits our purposes perfectly, is built even better than its German counterparts (according to BMW's own studies) and, from, all I understand, actually handles better than it's predecessor.

I like Jeremy and watch him often but often don't agree with his opinions. I suspect he likes the X5 much more than he admits- he's an entertainer after all. And a bloody pommie.

Do you have the source on this one? I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with you.

Clarkson never liked BMWs. He raves about everything British. Anyone who watches Top Gear knows this. He criticized the X5 for being big and heavy yet he prefers the Range Rover, which is bigger and heavier.

Clarkson is admittedly biased and yes, he's partial towards pretty mediocre British brands. But he did like the M3 CSL, the M5, and 535d. I think he hates Porsche more than BMW though..........haha "Porsche Coxster"
