That's very true.
Not sure but I think the electronic dipstick in i-Drive will not read the oil level if the engine oil is cold. It's cumbersome but you can check the oil level and if it shows then the oil is warmed up. Check it when the engine is cold and see what the computer says.
I have an 02 Porsche Turbo that does not have an oil temp. gauge (coolant temp. but no oil temp.) and the electronic dipstick on that car will not read oil level unless the oil is warmed up so that's what I do to check the oil temp.
It takes at least twice as long for the oil to warm up than the coolant.
I doubt BMW will put an oil temp. gauge in the X5 but it should certainly have one for coolant temp.
