Which Mtec bulbs???

Which Mtec bulbs more closely match the H.I.D's...Super White 4350K or Cosmos Blue 4750K? I want to change my Angels and fogs to match the H.I.D.'s and get rid of the yellow hue.

lakai 11-27-2007 01:00 AM

I bought the cosmos blue angel eyes and foglight bulbs and within a week i changed them back because the angel eyes are barely noticable, light that passes through rings seems shattered, not solid and the foglight blubs have a blue tint that seems to reflect too much blue more than anything, It makes it look cheap to be honest. I ordered the 8500k gp thunders and i'll let you know how they turn out when i install them. As for the foglights, I'm going to convert them to hid soon. Dont waste your money on the MTECS. You wont get the results you were hoping for.

How do you access the bulb for the fog light. Do you have to take out the plastic fender liner? Please advise. Thanks.

jamesboags 11-27-2007 01:07 AM

The MTEC COSMOS blue is too blue for the fogs... others have reported even worse performance on the angels in daytime with the GP's...Personally the angels are ok but I may change to super whites for the fogs as I only run those as turning lights anyway...

lakai 11-27-2007 01:11 AM

underneath the foglights there is a plastic piece which is like a grill cover. The piece where there is a horizonal silver bar in front of a fake black grill. You need to remove that piece by pressing downward on the bar while pulling it outward. There are 3 tabs on top that hold it in place. Dont be afraid to use force, It wont break, Just press down while pulling and it will slowly come out. Someone has a tutorial with pictures on this just search for it.

the Mtecs look horrible even at night time! The lights shatter between blue and purple through the angel eye rings. I can't wait for there to be a LED solution, but bought the GP's just because they were cheap! lol As long as I get consistant color throughout the rings, i'll be happy.

nikman 11-27-2007 01:32 AM

Thanks, Lakai. I'll give it a try tomorrow. Has anyone converted the fog lights to HID? If so, do each individual fog light still turn on when you make a turn?

I have not read any posts where someone has converted foglights to hid on the e70 yet. I'm going to try it when I get back from my vacation in a few weeks. AFAIK from hours of information gathering on this forum as well as other forums, you will probably need to install a relay to prevent a error and keep the lights from flickering. The adaptive cornering lights might pose a new problem in where the HID bulb takes time to charge and would probably create problems since the bulbs are charging and discharging so much more. The best option would be to disable the foglight from being adaptive, or to use LED.

I thought I noticed that.... thought it was just the angle of viewing.. may need to throw in my old bulbs..?

Denalio 11-27-2007 08:48 AM

Wow! Thanks for the info. I won't be wasting a few bucks now. I have also considered H.I.D. for the fog, but the wear on the ignitor and ballast is a major concern. Everytime you turn the blinker on the system needs to arc that 25,000 volts and boot the bulbs. That's a lot of short term ignition.

Denalio 11-27-2007 01:46 PM

So I know not to do the angels, but what about the fog lights? Same issues?

dbinc 11-27-2007 02:50 PM

Has anyone tried using this?

http://www.namotorwerks.com/products...hp/II=508/PA=0

Or this (Xenesis):

http://www.bimmian.com/vehicle.htm?veh=70

Denalio: Here's what I used: http://www.hoen-usa.com/
I don't think it is perfect match to the HID, but it is a lot better than stock and it is a lot brighter.

Good luck and let us know what you end up using.

lakai 11-28-2007 06:50 AM

Theres some pretty good information gathered on another forum about the angel eyes in new model bmw's that use the H8 bulb.

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=84395

There is some good information there on why it is taking so long to come up with a satisfactory solution to the angel eye problem.

dbinc 11-28-2007 03:29 PM

lakai: I just checked the link, good information, but kind of scary to do the mod. I am interested in the www.v-leds.com, but I wonder if it will give off a code on the X5. Has anyone tried it on the X5 yet?

Denalio 11-28-2007 04:17 PM

You probably need to wire in a load resistor.

Denalio 11-28-2007 04:48 PM

Also, the L.E.D.'s will not be nearly as bright as the halogen (less lumens).

dbinc 11-28-2007 05:44 PM

Man, there's got to be a bulb out there or some easier solution, any ideas or solutions anyone?

Thanks dbinc I ordered the Hoen bulbs.

dbinc 11-29-2007 04:40 PM

Denalio: No problem, let me know how it goes.

No the Xenonmatch. I wanted to go with the OE wattage and was fearfull that the Titanium bulbs might burn up the harness.

jamesboags 11-29-2007 05:21 PM

Yep... They supply upgraded harnesses.. but probably best to stick with the original just in case...!!! I'll give them a go ...!

Same reason why I just went with the Xenomatch.

jamesboags 11-30-2007 05:36 AM

Ordered some myself... out with the MTECS !!!

lakai 12-06-2007 09:37 PM

So i get the GP thunder 8500k today. I just installed them and um. Forget about it. haha They took awhile to ship because I guess they did not have any in stock. The build quality of this particular batch is horrible. I guess u get what you pay for. $12 per pair for GP Thunders vs $25 per pair of Mtecs. Either way, I give up on the angel eyes. HID fog lights are next. Wish me luck

jamesboags 12-06-2007 09:48 PM

Got My Hoens yesterday... will install on the weekend !!

Haha how much did u pay for them. I dont know what I'm going to do with all these lights. If someone wants to do a detailed write-up and comparison with photos and stuff, I'll donate them.

nynd 12-06-2007 09:59 PM

I bought a set of MTEC's...have yet to install....sounds like I shouldn't bother...

jamesboags 12-11-2007 07:34 AM

Have installed the Hoens as Angels... no photos yet.. but they are nice and bright. . the other day in a tunnel I thought I had the headlights on !!!...Will install fogs on the weekend.. First impression...they really are far far better than the MTECs...

lakai 12-11-2007 08:01 AM

really? If its no trouble do you mind taking pictures of the MTEC and Hoen bulbs as a comparison as well ? Appreciate it

dbinc 12-11-2007 09:52 PM

jamesboags: Which hoen angel bulbs did you purchase? The one I bought was not as bright as stock and I ended up returning those and just keeping the xenomatch fogs.

jamesboags 12-11-2007 10:46 PM

I got the xenonmatch.. comared to the MTECS they seem brighter... maybe not as bright as stock but I do not like the golden look of stock regardless that they are brighter ..;) ..

Denalio 01-10-2008 05:00 PM

I ordered the Hoen xenonmatch but they never showed up. They messed up the order. They have been on back order. I was going to try ther Piaa Xtreme White H11's. Anybody use these? how is the color. They claim they are 55W putting out 110W of 4000K. Do they match the Factory H.I.D.?
