Speed limit because of the All Season tires

Hi to all of you,

I am new in this forum and first of all I would like to say that it is a very good site for people who like BMW.

I wanted to know
Does anyone know about a speed limitation on X5 if you fit All season tires?
If someone does know anything about that, I wanted to know if the limitation is set with the on board computer (I-drive) or otherwise.

Many thanks in advance

The electronic governor is set at 210 km/h ( 130mph ). The computers will interrupt the fuel supply at this point.

Mica, all tires have a speed rating so it depends on the exact tire, but you can correlate the tire to its speed rating by the chart below. All of the information below was cut-and-paste directly from the tire rack.

Cheers,
Keith

M 81 mph130 km/h
N 87 mph140km/hTemporary Spare Tires
P 93 mph150 km/h
Q 99 mph160 km/hStudless & Studdable Winter
R 106 mph170 km/hH.D. Light Truck Tires
S 112 mph180 km/hFamily Sedans & Vans
T 118 mph190 km/hFamily Sedans & Vans
U 124 mph200 km/h
H 130 mph210 km/hSport Sedans & Coupes
V 149 mph240 km/hSport Sedans, Coupes

When Z-speed rated tires were first introduced, they were thought to reflect the highest tire speed rating that would ever be required, in excess of 240 km/h or 149 mph. While Z-speed rated tires are capable of speeds in excess of 149 mph, how far above 149 mph was not identified. That ultimately caused the automotive industry to add W- and Y-speed ratings to identify the tires that meet the needs of new vehicles that have extremely high top-speed capabilities.

Y 186 mph300 km/hExotic Sports Cars

On the E70 there is a higher speed setting if you have the 20" inch wheels. This can only be set by the dealer.

High, if you want to go to the limits of the car, dont use all season tires. Use high performance tires which are adapted on this use.

Just my 2 cents !

Is this just on the 4.8 or also on the deisels?

Yes, but there are two points to clarify

1) the 20" y-spokes from the dealer do not come with all season tires

2) the limiter you are talking about is the top speed of the car, the OP is referring to the speed limit for the alarm that can be set via i-drive; two completely different topics

In the US this comes when you get the sport package and then opt to upgrade to the 20" y-spoke wheels.

If you have a build sheet for your deisel vehicle you can see if the option is selected:

It will look like this:

"ZSP and 2LE will add 840: Increase Top Speed Limiter"

I wonder how they set this? My 4.8i was delivered with Sports and 20" wheels. For the season, I have had them replace those with 18" snows. I wonder if they decreased my top speed limiter? Not that I'm concerned about it; even with my V1 installed, I don't expect to be hitting the top end limit :)

I highly doubt if they changed anything. It's a programming issue.
