I am a big fan of Jet Black as I have it on my e53 (had it for almost 8 years). Sapphire is the "new black" that seems pretty popular. But to me and if you look at the 2 next to each when they are clean Jet Black pops out at you with a mirror refection where as Sapphire is more milky (inherent to it being metallic). When I decide to move to the e70 it will be Jet Black without any hesitation. My $.02.

Yep. Saphire is metallic and Jet Black is NOT. The Saphire looks much better and more upscale than Jet Black in my opinion. The Saphire comands a premium price in other BMW cars, but it is a no extra cost option in the X5.

Best thing to do is go to the dealer on a day when they just have washed their cars and have them pull both colors out side by side so you can decide.

Here is my '01 Jet Black e53--most guess it's only a few years old even though it will be 8 years old in February. So, I have like a nice resume on keeping a black BMW looking clean.

Nice BGM. I had a black years ago, but did not match your discipline to keep it pristine. It is a hard color to take care of. For people that do not wanna be slave of their cars and like it black, I recommend the Black Saphire.

I just checked, I have Saphire not the non-metallic Jet black, just goes to show how non-important it was to me, besides, metallic does look better freshly washed, and in the sun, after that....nobody will notice the difference, hard to get rid of the swirl mark...in both

I like sapphire more, it has some subtle little goldish (hence the metallic) flecks in it, and I think it offers depth that the flat jet black does not offer.

Jet black also shows swirls like nobody's fookin business.
