2009 X5 35d Problems
Hi Everyone,
Thought I would see if anyone else had / is having these issues with their 35d. I have around 800 miles on my car and it has developed this excessive rattling sound when accelerating from a stop starting at about 1300 RPM through to around 1700 RPM. It is significantly noticeable when you have the windows or sunroof open. It sounds like a bad ping. The interesting thing is that it does not happen when you try and run the car up in neutral, the engine sound is completely smooth. Today I had the check engine light come on, go out after a couple of start cycles, and then come back on later. I am going to call the dealer and schedule an appointment tomorrow. If anyone has had similar issues, please let me know. Thanks! Ed |
Hi Ed, no problems here with around 1900 miles. I don't have the noise you're talking about and mine runs great. Let us know what the dealer comes up with. I'm running only premium diesel fuel.

My 3.5d is at the dealer for the 3rd time with the check engine light coming on and staying on (8400 miles). They asked to keep it a couple of days (with loaner). The last time the system showed Fault 4C52-Charge Air Temp Plausibility and 4B82-EGR Deviation. There were no failures present and the car runs fine. Each time this has occurred has been when the car is started first thing in the morning. My service rep seemed to think that back in January there was a discussion among BMW service personnel about this and that it was a software issue. I will post when I get the car back to see if there is a resolution.

Mine has done 10,000 miles with no problems

jwscfa, EGR code is bad mojo if it is anything like a Ford diesel. does it smoke real bad at start-up in the morning?
OP, i think you are suffering from turbo lag. try various techniques on the pedal to see if you can get the turbos to kick in earlier. |

Could be bad fuel, I know from experience that a diesel will let you know by either a pinging rattle sound or poor performance if the fuel is not up to scratch.

BMW says to use fuel with a cetane rating of 51 or higher.

Dealer is in the process of reprogramming the car with a new BMW software update that was just released. They have told me that it addresses the fault code issues I have been having and they are also replacing the sensor in question even though no failure is indicated. I have no smoke or drivability issues with the car, just the check engine light being on constantly. I will post again once the service is complete.
