I love it, I'm getting my 993tt done in the same.

Fastbuck 05-24-2009 02:34 PM

don't know which one is worse, both look horrible to me.

Weasel 05-24-2009 04:00 PM

It looks like it's either spray painted with semi gloss or vinyl wrapped...

rh71 05-24-2009 04:05 PM

too much all around... a little bit less somehow - maybe exclude the wheels, and it'd be ok

cliveywolves 05-24-2009 04:05 PM

not for me sorry.. its just wrong...

Not my cup of tea, but it certainly beats the hell out of using paint. The warranty is around 5 years depending on environmental conditions. To return the vehicle to its original paint, the vinyl is simply peeled off. Estimated cost is around $1500-$2000 as per e90post comments, probably for materials only.

Weasel 05-24-2009 07:09 PM

That's what I suspect was done to these matte black BMWs... the vinyl wrap.

hiren04 05-24-2009 11:58 PM

its like the batmobile

xxx 05-25-2009 12:07 AM

I don't know about the X but the pcar was painted base, clear. There are paint manufacturers out there that try to keep up with the times.

alewifebp 05-25-2009 12:28 AM

I love the matte black! :hawt:

durnie 05-25-2009 02:46 AM

looks like a blackboard with wheels:wow:

bmwman3241 05-25-2009 04:30 AM

I agree that the wheels could be changed. I am having my BMW dealer make me a sample of Matte Space Gray and Matte Black. If I like either one, I will repaint (not vinyl) my car. I had the Vinyl on my GMC, but I would rather paint it for a better finish.

villajoe 05-25-2009 10:03 PM

i think it looks sweet!

sharka 05-28-2009 04:58 AM

i see matte black cars at shows and they look awesome... but after driving around, doesn't it just look dirty all the time??

And it could stay dirty too... Think of when you paint the walls of a room with flat vs semi gloss or gloss. Easier to stain. Unless they used a product like the flat look clear coat.

watrob 05-28-2009 08:05 AM

Question, is the Vinyl able to peeled off once you tier of having a Matte car?

I have seen quite a few race cars with it on but have never asked the question!

I received my Matte Space Gray sample today from my dealer, and they did a very good job on it. It is matte, and looks matte, but they put a layer of clear coat in a way where it doesn't damage the paint and it doesn't get dirty similar to the standard paint yet it is matte. I will try to get a picture of the sample up, although it won't show much detail.

Yes the Vinyl peels of nicely and doesn't damage the original paint as long as you don't have scratches on the actual paint. If you have scratches, when the vinyl is peeled off, it peels some of the paint around the scratches off as well. I had no problem getting it off of my GMC.

Are you thinking of this for the X5M?

No, I am thinking of doing it on my current X5. I may do something similar to my X5 M, but only time will tell. Here is what the car should look like if I go through with it:

Bozz 05-28-2009 09:05 AM

Matt space grey, looking nice and silky. probably all the metallic paints would look good as a Matt finish

Weasel 05-28-2009 01:18 PM

That matte steel grey does look better than the black to me! Kinda looks like bead blasted aluminum.

J.Belknap 05-28-2009 01:34 PM

Love it.

Fredo 05-29-2009 01:28 PM

Someone that lives 200 yards from my house bought a matte black X6 recently....not sure about it myself but I can see why someone would like it.

What do you guys think? I think it would be perfect with gray tint!

alewifebp 06-05-2009 12:26 AM

I was wondering what a Space Gray would look like in matte. I think I'd need to see it in person to make a final judgement.

Looks good, but having the windshield tint come down past the AS-1 line detracts from the appearance.

bmwman3241 06-05-2009 12:23 PM

Not my car, but exactly what it will look like. I will get my X done from the same company. I will order the Matte Vinyl from them tomorrow, and I will get the entire windshield tinted chrome/gray as well as the other windows

It is a local company in Dubai, Foil a Car, which is a German company. They have many pictures of different cars up on their website. They have Matte Vinyl in pretty much every color.

Here are some more pictures of the matte gray X5 as well as a few different colors including matte black.

x5dubai777 06-06-2009 03:51 PM

very nice congrats was thinking of going with matte, how much was it?

by the way there is a trend of gold chrome going on in abu dhabi...horrific

I have not done it yet, but am going to go tomorrow to see samples in person and possibly close the deal. I am trying to decide whether to go with matte vinyl from foil-a-car, or have AGMC make me some custom matte paint. I will decide by tomorrow, hopefully.
Gold, silver, or anything shiny is a trend in the UAE. I might get some gray tint which has the chrome-ish look on my X from solargaurd.

x5TT 06-07-2009 01:55 AM

any workshop can do this in Australia (melb)?

It does not say anywhere on the site about price. How much does this cost? Also I see they are located in Dubai, what if you live in the states or Canada?

Yii 06-08-2009 02:13 AM

wow thats really sick stuff. is there any way of doing this in the states? and btw batmobile came to mind when i saw that pic lol

I went to the company today, and was quoted 2 options:
1. 27,000 DHS which is 7,400 USD. They will put a layer of any color (excluding black, white, gold, and chrome) and then put a layer of matte vinyl over it.
2. For 17,000 Dhs which is about 4,600 USD. They will put a layer of matte vinyl directly over your current car paint to make it matte.
3. I did not find the price, but for black and white, they have a single layer vinyl already made. This will be around 22,000-26,000 (My Guess)
ALL THE PRICES ARE FOR THE ENTIRE 07+ E70 X5

As for an installer in the US, some specialty shops should have them, but I am unsure. The company here specializes in this and has done many many high end and standard cars.

really ugly
whats the point!!!!
just don't get it

RougeTrooper 06-08-2009 05:46 PM

In high risk parts of the world with lots of carjacking, several company's re-paint all company cars right off the dealer lot matte to make them less attractive to thieves...

tell your insurance agent that story...

jpl 06-08-2009 08:32 PM

its less atrractive for sure!!!!!!!

New color option is now available .. primer grey ... My dealer said it's getting to be quite popular....

Bozz 06-10-2009 08:16 AM

How do you keep the paint work protected? normally you would use a good wax or synthetic coating etc but wouldn't this just stuff up the Matt look and make it shine.

Hi Bozz,

I think the Matte Black is a vinyl cover placed over the original paint work, they do race cars with it here but I don't think I have ever seen a road car done with it here in Brisbane.

So whats your plans with your angel eyes?

I still want to sort the angel eyes out but cant find the specific halogen bulb description that lights them up. I think that the bulb could be an 2825 c5w type but I am not sure. Lance in the spare parts dept cant even find them listed anywhere on his computer either.
