Navigation DVD player issue

I need to bring my car in but wanted to check with you all. My navigation DVD player would now keep asking me to insert the navigation DVD. It seems to be bad. It does it when I turn the car on or in the middle of driving, my nav screen would go out. I have the "Map my direction" on the small screen. It was working just fine until this past week where it kept saying it can't read the dvd. I took the dvd out and cleaned it and yet the issue continues. Anyone have the same issue? Is it a bad DVD player? My car is only 5 months old. The DVD seems to be in perfect condition.

Funny you should mention that. I've started having that problem also for the past few weeks. I have a 2008 X5 that I got a year ago and I've just started having the problem. It'll tell me to insert the disc event though the dvd is already inserted and it won't eject if I press the eject button. If I completely power off the car and remove the key for a few minutes, everything will reset itself and the navigation system will start working again. I did buy the Navteq update dvd from Navteq directly so maybe the issue is with the dvd. I bought a brand new 2008 X5 and the navigation dvd was a 2007! My dealer said the 2008 hadn't been released yet wish was crap because I got it from Navteq. Maybe I'll try going back to the 2007 dvd that came with the truck. Anyhow, good luck. I may just go in to the dealer if it continues. Unfortunately, it doesn't happen all the time so I'm sure the dealer will just say that they can't reproduce the problem like they usually do.

Just checking to see if others have had this same problem.

I have a 2008 4.8i and bought the latest disc (2009.1) from Navteq this year. The local dealer had my X for almost a week due to failed fuel sensors. On the way home, the nav worked fine. Started up this morning and it asked for the dvd.

Took the disc out, put it back in and after about 10 minutes the maps came up. Then on the way home the same error message - "please insert navigation dvd" - and no joy.

Dealer says bring it on for tests but they just had it for a week and I am close to a trip to HKG and don't want to turn it back over to them right now.

Yep, my gps DVD player has failed as well. It loads up sometimes, but after 10-15 min, it gives read error message and asks to insert DVD. If it does load up, the DVD player makes a cyclic buzzing sound, 3sec on and 3sec off until it gives error message. I am bringing it in next week to have it checked and sounds like the player will need replacement.

I guess I am not alone with he gps issue.....

Exactly the same problem here. All was fine up till the car was about 8 months old....

I have the same problem and the truck is 5mths old. Dealer is ordering me a new screen. Not sure how that will fix the problem. I think they tried a software update but didnt solve it. Just waiting for the part to come. I will post an update once I get the part changed.

The same problem on 6 months old 2009 model, started this week. Today I made a copy of stock navigation DVD, will try it in the car tomorrow, to make sure it's not the dvd.

Just started happening to me too. Has anyone resolved the issue? Did the dealer replace the drive? I assume it is not the DVD as it looks clean.

Yep, they replaced the whole DVD reader unit. Interestingly, there were no error codes on the OBC or within the DVD reader, but they were able to replicate the problem, so they replaced it. Works perfectly now. Hopefully it won't fail in 8 mos like the original one. Good luck

I had the same issue with my 08...

started a few months ago and drove me nuts...plus it was embarrassing each time I used it... kept erroring out after 10min of use... got the same "please insert DVD" msg...

called my rep at Westchester BMW and he ordered a replacement unit and had it swapped...

so far so good...

i also had an AC blower unit that kept coming and going... it would die and not respond just like that... and got that swapped on the same visit.(eventhough it was working when I gave them the vehicle)

I have nothing but good things to say about this dealership... make sure you keep a good relationship with your rep...
