we did it without a rivet gun and it was very difficult. I say "we" because you really need 2 sets of hands... the rivet gun is really worth saving the frustration.
if you must, heat up the plastic rivet a bit with a hair dryer so that it can bend a bit easier. Use pliers to pull the stem outward (it will take 1 person to do just this) while the other person uses any other tool to hold the small base of the rivet in place against the flare. Like I said, this was the only way we could figure out how to do it without the gun... very not recommended. We gave up after putting in only 3 rivets under each wheel. Body shop eventually put the rest in without being asked when they saw the extras in my trunk. |
:iagree:...it was a pain in the rear to do it w/o a rivet gun. It is do-able, but you will find it very frustrated at times. I did used a plier to try to install the flares, but it was kind of difficult to do it without the help of second person and I decided to wait until my rivet gun came. I was just too anxious to install them even before I got the rivet gun :p:. I would not recommend installing the fender flares w/o using a proper rivet gun tool. Good luck...

I have a rivet tool for the small pop rivets, such as the ones in the trim piece for the rear bumper when installing the hitch receiver, but I haven't been able to find one for the fender flare rivets. Does anyone know the diameter of the fender arch rivets, and where to find a tool for those? My local hardware store doesn't have a tool for those larger pop rivets.

Thanks, shashankmittal.
I guess I should have been looking on-line, instead of at the hardware store. Jim. |
