Windshield Pricing
 

The E70's windshield got hit by a big rock. BMW of Fairfax wants $1000 to do the job so the insurance of course is not happy with that, still waiting for a reply from the insurance company (coz i'm definately not paying that)

Is this reasonable pricing for a windshield?? I know the E53 pricing is not like that..

Mine was $1200 at dealer; State Farm only willing to pay $800; Deductible was $500. State Farm wanted me to go to Lynx. I let the dealer do it and paid the difference. (my cost was around $900 including deductible)

Do you have an HUD? I recall the HUD windhield is quite a bit more expensive.

That stinks. I feel your pain. I have had three windsheilds replaced in as many years. 1,000 seems insane! I rented a tribeca last year and drove it to Salt Lake. On the way I caught a stone. Called National and they told me it would be 650 bucks. Called around in Salt Lake and the prices ranged from 200 to 275. I paid 240 and got it done at the installers house. Did a great job. The windshield included a section to met ice off the wipers when parked in the off position.

Call around and get quotes from the local windsheild replacement companies. Stay away from the ones that sound like they sub out the work. You can tell because the person on the other end has no clue about windshield replacement. Ask them how they heat the adhesive. Pros have a glue heating system built into their trucks. Do not let anyone that has not done BMW's before, do your job. Make sure you can watch them work. Its OK if they offer to come to your house. The tools needed are minimal. Make sure you get OEM or equivalent glass. This is important. Also, insist on a new surround seal (if needed). Don't let them re-use the old one. Make sure you discuss the fact that you have a rain sensing wiper system. If they know what they are doing they will be informed about this already and be able to address any concerns.

Don't worry, your car will be good as new if the installer is competent. All auto mfgrs know that the windsheild might suffer damage and need replacement. Its designed to be replaced. Hope that helps

The pricing is insane I still can't figure out what makes it so pricey. i will definately use a different shop if need be (thanks Destination:Moon for the info). But I have full coverage on the insurance so they should cover it no matter what.. we'll see.

If you have full glass coverage, which usually carries a $0 deductable, why do you care how much it costs and why is your carrier giving you grief? It doesn't make sense. Around here they sound out the glass guy from Safelite and he fixes it in your driveway.

I would tell your adjuster "I pay for full glass coverage, I'm entitled to OEM parts, i'm having it fixed, you're going to pay for it, in full"

My 2 cents (not to start a fight) is that it costs everyone that buys insurance if you allow your insurance company to pay 1000 dollars for stuff that should cost less than half that amount. Its not free money. Its wrong to let venders rip off the system just because it does not come out of your pocket. Just like its wrong for insurers to deny you coverage for things that you buy insurance for!

we actually have a $100 deductable. and i don't know why it was denied. nationwide denied it but the agent OKed it (he told us to wait until he gets more details). i am not the primary driver of the e70 so i did not speak with nationwide regarding this issue.

i don't mind using another option but i have read that the process should take a few days, not a 1 day job like most insurance companies do with their 'recommended' shops (what they did for our H2). but that car doesnt need pampering haha

Though probably it's not in your area, you can do an online quote from Gerber Collision and Glass (Auto Glass and Auto Body Collision Repair ? Gerber Collision & Glass). I have HUD in my X5 and the website quotes me around $1200.00 installed.

From Tischer BMW, you can also check the price of the parts. I believe the cost of the windshield with HUD is around $1200.00 not including the moldings, clips, etc.

W/o HUD, and with climate control (according to Tischer BMW), the glass itself costs $718.00. So $1000.00 with labor and all doesn't sound too outrageous.

Now the question why BMW charges that much for a Windshield is another story.
