I know this is a dated thread, but I just wanted those of us new diesel owners to rest assure that their new Xd's aren't going to burn to a crisp!

I recently experienced this "burn off" smell when my wife parked the X in our garage and was somewhat concerned. All I kept thinking about was that thread on this forum related to some guy's Xd that allegedly burned...Anyway, the smell is very evident (at least in a garage). I thought a neighbor was cooking out. You also hear somewhat of a ping noise, like a muffler cooling off. The smell/sound seemed to be located on the passenger side, and you could feel the heat radiate near the front wheel well. Like others noted, it lasted about 10 minutes and I just kept the garage door open. I was just shy of 1k miles.

this is my first diesel car as well..so i just thought it was normal.. (but genuinely have no clue)

would others relate it to smelling like a bad fart?

I'm at 3500 miles, and have yet to notice this smell. Enclosed garage, I must either be getting lucky with burnoff occurring on the road, or just am not sensitive enough.

I'm at 12k miles and honestly can't say I have detected one. I also park in enclosed garage!

My '09 35d never had the smell. My '11 35d has done it twice. Almost smelled like a funky wood burn or even electrical smoke. Went away after shutdown. My CA said another of his customers told him BMW said it was over injected insulation of some sort that was going back to a liquified state and landing on a hot surface.

First off I would take the double lemon X5d on fire thread with a grain of salt. Second, my 50 had that smell when I first got it but now at 1200 miles no more Oilish smell. these forums can make you paranoid if you read them word for work. I build a few motors, trans, diffs in my life and I noticed the smell but I was not calling the dealer about it. give it some time for the newness to wear off and let the X break itself in. good luck

Yeah, I know what you mean about forums!!

But you and I are talking about two different issues. This smell is not the typical new car burn off smell which you experienced with your 50. This thread is about diesels and the DPF.

It's indeed normal. You'll only smell if on the off chance that your DPF was in a regen mode when you pulled into the garage, and smelled the end of the regen. It's when the engine ECM determines that the backpressure is getting to high because of the carbon build up in the filter, and it raises the temp in the exhaust stream to burn off the carbon.

In most cases, you'll be driving down the road when this occurs, and you won't notice a thing. If you were in an active regen when you parked, you may notice the smell, and the exhaust system 'pinging' when it begins to cool down. All normal.

If the regen didn't finish when you parked, not to worry. The ECM will be able to determine if more regen is necessary, and the algorithim will engage the system to complete the regen when all systems are in the proper conditions

A small price to pay for clean exhaust and 27+ MPG.

My neighbor is a Lexus GM, his wife loved RX's and (I'm sure to meet various monthly quotas) she'd have a new one four times a year. But when she got the RX450h she about fell over at the increase in insurance costs - for her it was an eye opener. Then she didn't like the way it drove at all. That one only lasted a month, then "poof" she had a new RX.

Fingers crossed I'll get 27+, but already hitting 24+ on long freeway drives on an engine with less than 1,000k!. And when you mean clean engine, this one is surgically clean. Take a look at the picture below. This is my tail pipe (untouched/unwashed) after 1,000 miles! I wish my dishwasher cleaning dishes this well!:cheer:

My wife has an RX450h with about 16K miles and believe me that tailpipe sparkle won't last. Mileage averages 27/gal and never one problem! Faster than my 35d but more like a car than a truck.
