Stinky
 

I've got about 850 miles on my new X5d. Each time that I fueled it up, I brought it home, stuck it in the garage, and noticed a stink coming from my auto. Maybe burnt diesel, possibly new engine break-in smell. This has only occurred twice - once after each fill-up. Otherwise there is no odd smell. Anyone else experienced this with theirs?

Once after each fill up is rather suspect. Does it smell like overfill diesel?

It's kind of a sweet, heavy, burnt smell. Doesn't smell like the diesel that's straight out of the pump.

Yes, I've had this a few times and can't put my finger on it. It doesn't have anything
to do with filling it up. I don't know if it's urea or what, but I've had the same smell. I've never had it after filling up. It does stink up the garage...

I've lifted my hood and don't see any smoke...

It doesn't have anything to do with break in. I have already broken mine in. I doesn't do this very often, but I've had it happen a few times. I think it has something to do with the exhaust.

Read the section titled "Diesel Particulate Filter" on page 139 of the owners manual. It describes how the 35d burns off particulates in the filter even if the engine has recently been shut down. Maybe this is what you are smelling.

FWIW We've never smelled anything with our 35d. But we're currently parking it in a well ventilated construction tent, while I'm building the 3 bay garage :)

Thanks for the post, Funf. That could certainly be it, though I haven't noticed any smoke - just the smell. I'm relieved that it isn't just mine; sounds like this occasional occurrence is normal for our diesels.

I've noticed the same thing. Smells like burning soot. It occurs every now and then, and it does correlate with what manual says about the diesel burning off the particles collected in the soot filter.

sounds exactly like the particulate burnoff FunfDreisig posted, I notice mine from time to time, doesn't seem to correlate to refuelling for me tho
