I didn't see comfort access in the specs. Great feature.

And if you use nav a lot, the heads up is awesome too. The wheels is definitely a preference. The 20's were fine for me. I'm use to my 21's now too. Love them!

I didn't go with comfort access, due to some problems I've read about. Maybe it was confined to just a few people, but to be honest it's not a big deal and for $1,100.00 it seemed steep on top of everything else. I don't mind putting the key in the ignition and in past cars I've owned with it, I hate having to search for the damn key, when it falls under the seat or I stick it into a cup holder and can't find it 5-hours later. I know it's silly, but hey...

As for the phone integration, if it must be done at the factory I guess I'll call them up and order it (if it's not too late), just to have the option. But, I swore it had the antenna in the shark fin, and you are only buying the first part of the cradle (you must then buy a phone specific cradle). Again I have a current iPhone, then buying another cradle for the next iPhone, etc. can get expensive. The reception here in CA has been fine when driving. It's in my home where I have more of an issue.

As for the ventilated active seats, I decided to skip them. I had them on a previous vehicle (a 350z) and they looked cool. On that car they were not ventilated, but they were difficult to clean and I even have a detailing background, somewhere in my long history. You need to be careful of the product you use. But, I can just envision my wife spilling a bottle of water on the seats and kerplunk- there goes an $800.00 seat activation module. Real reason I skipped them: to save money. The MSRP was already at $70k. I felt that's getting up there for a 35d.

As for cost I'll actually pay and the eco-credit, I don't know. I'll certainly let everyone here know what unfolds. Apparently BMWNA is setting the price on this car, that's what I'm told, at least. I am not dealing with an SA or taking delivery via an SA, but from a customer service/marketing woman at the dealer.

I was told there's a 7 to 10% markup on MSRP depending on how the model is equipped, but I'd think it's more. Anyway, there doesn't seem to be any foolery taking place. They continue to say I will pay less for this vehicle, that is better equipped, than I will for my 2010. I believe they're right. But, we'll see, obviously.

Lastly, someone asked about the HUD unit. I agree it's pretty neat. The reason I skipped it is that I almost always wear sunglasses that prevent me from viewing it (polarized I believe- made by Oakley). It's a very cool feature, but again at the cost it's hard to justify. I could have been at $75k retail with the seats and the HUD very quickly and I think that's really pushing the limit for a 35d. I think I'm happy with my choices. I was very bummed about having to buy an "off the lot" 35d, as I needed delivery prior to the end of 2009 for tax reasons. But, in a weird way it's all working out well.

I'll be careful of the holdback fee, also, which I am also aware of. As for the eco-credit, I'm going to push them on this one, as it was offered with the original vehicle and should be on this one IMHO.

Though, I can't have everything and at the end of the day, if I can walk away with a vehicle that works well, and is close to what I paid for my 2010, I'll be satisfied.

Lastly, nope, no spare tire. I'm confident with the run flats. Anyone think that's a mistake? I'll never be more than 50 to 100 miles away from service, worst case. The only thing I can imagine is that with the 20" wheels, it's probably not all that difficult to destroy one, given that the vehicle does weigh some 6k lbs. fully loaded. So, maybe I should think of that option.

Lastly, lastly, I can't emphasize enough how far kindness went in this situation. I know there are a few others who have had similar circumstances. The BMW customer reps are so used to being yelled at, that they expect nothing less. Tip to the wise: don't yell at them. It's not their fault. I don't think I raised my voice to anyone a single time throughout the entire transaction. It something I mention, only due to the fact that BMWNA could have pushed this issue. They have deep pockets, and well, compared to them I don't. So, if you're in a buyback situation A) feel free to contact me and B) really, really, really, really be maintain your composure.

Keep the advice coming, if anyone has anything additional to add. Again BMW finally stepped up to the plate. It took 6-months, but the end result is what's important.

Glad to see your problems are behind you. No premium package? Is that a new thing for 2011's? Are you going for the tire and wheel insurance with the 20" wheels?

I have to agree with AlexK. I know why people order the side steps, because they look good but are dysfunctional.

I did not order the spare but wish I had it. I NEVER use the extra space under the rear mat...

-My current 35D has 18" wheels with factory issued run flat Bridgestones with high side walls. I do have adaptive drive suspension, however. The vehicle is stable at 100 mph. But it's apparent the tire and wheel combination is not meant for ultra-high-speed cruising. I believe the 20" wheels and 315mm rear tires will add a large amount of stability. I do not commonly drive for extended periods at 100 mph., but it is sometimes required to get out of dangerous situations on I-5 and on I-10 there are stretches where the average cruise speed is 90 mph. (Fair warning, Arizona, has an incredibly extensive system of video speed traps on all State Highways and Interstates.) If you're cruising through the area make sure you take precautions. The tickets are obscenely expensive. I had a $350.00 ticket for driving 75 in a 65 on I-17 from Phoenix to Sedona.

Options still considering:
- Smart Phone integration. No one can tell me if the $150.00 buyings the first of two cradles or if there is actually an inductive antenna installed in the sharkfin of the vehicle. I believe the antenna is already there, but apparently no one can answer this for me definitively. If anyone knows, I'm still looking for a definitive answer.
- Active Driver Seat with Ventilated (Heating & Cooling) Driver and Passenger Seats, which adds Perforated Leather to the front seats. I originally only wanted perforated leather, but was told they can't be ordered without this $2,100.00 package. I believe they compliment the multi-contour seats so the difference is only $1,100.00.

Again, this is all going great, save for the fact that no SA will assist myself or the customer service woman who's actually conducting the transaction. The salesmen feel that if there is no commission, they'll enter the order, but not perform any salesmanship. The individual who sold me the defective X5 is the one who physically entered the order into the computer, but he refused to assist me further.

When I asked why he was acting so strangely, he said flatly: I'm making no commission off of this sale. I reminded him he did make commission off of the original sale, but it didn't seem to help.

There's not a lot of cooperation at the dealership apparently and the salesman said that by entering in this order it was taking his time away from courting commission generating customers.

Long story short: I'm left doing research on my own and with a very helpful, but relatively uninformed customer relations woman, in her young 30s who's doing her best to keep the process moving forward, but who knows nothing about BMWs per se. Her job is simply to address complaints and handle buybacks. She said she is currently working on 45 BMW buybacks and any given time of all different models. I don't know if that's higher than any other brand, but it seems like a lot.

Anyway, again: research is up to me entirely. So, I'm doing my best. If anyone has any thoughts on my order, please let me know! I'd love the bumper cameras. They're only a $300.00 order, but apparently they're not going to be offered until later this year (probably around the time my vehicle is ready for delivery) which they expected to be about 3-months.

Thanks all. Again, if anyone wants the myriad of fault codes from my old 35D, I'll get around to posting them this week. They are extensive, but may be informative to to the forum as a whole.

I can't imagine the cost of replacing two main computers had the car been out of warranty. I could see them costing $10k each. The process to have them replaced is unbelievable! - okay this post has gone on long enough.

Yeah I know, I could have saved some bucks with the lane departure. But, I'm not always driving. A certain someone has more confidence than she should at certain times of the night. I feel this will solve many arguments.

Either that or it will create many arguments. I can now say "pull over and let me drive, even the car says you're falling asleep!"

Smart phone: I ended up ordering, after all for two reasons.

A) I know BMW is vastly expanding their online services (BMW Assist/Search). Things like e-mail and text messages are forthcoming, according to nearly everyone I've spoken to at BMWNA.
B) It's possible that BMW may release other options that require the smart phone integration, during the time period I own the car. One thing I suspect will be commonplace, and is already sold by verizon is a mobile wifi hub. Essentially it's a mobile wireless router that allows those in the vehicle and surrounding area to surf the Internet wirelessly. I can see BMW offering their own version. We're just seeing the tip of the iceberg in the smartphone war. Again, the above is just my guess of what "could" be offered. Save for A) as I do know e-mail and true web surfing is on its way, as is offered overseas.

Anyway, to answer your question, in all honesty if the lane departure saves me during that 1 in 20,000 mile incident, when I'm distracted for a second (last time was about 20,000 miles, when I was staring off at Palo Verde Nuclear Power Plant) - I didn't hit the rumble strip, but I was distracted for a split second, than it's worth it.

Will I rely on it to work in an emergency? No I won't rely on it anymore than I would rely on Volvo's new city brake and BMW's new stop & go smart cruise. The ultimate responsibility for paying attention to the road is up to me.

But, given it does offer improved safety, even if it's not 100% reliable, I did feel it's worth it.

As a side note, which I'm sure most of you are aware: The E70 is the safest vehicle the NIHS has ever tested period, out of any car class. In other words, according to the insurance companies, the current generation X5 is the safest vehicle in the world in terms of frontal, side, and rear end protection.

Can you elaborate on what you have heard? I have not included smartphone integration on my pending order based on several negative reviews on the forums.

Posted elsewhere in this forum, smart phone integration provides enhanced reception from the antenna in the shark fin, along with charging feature for the I Phone (don't know about others). And yes, you will need to buy the cradle separately. I think it is worth it. Our reception improved, and the charging feature is one less hassle factor for your phone.
