Exactly why I didn't by a 'workhorse' vehicle like the X5 with painted bumpers. I have plain ones. They look better (IMO), don't chip and if they get really messed up I'll change the plastic covers.

I'm not a fan of painted bumpers either to be honest, but they seem to be all the rage on cars these days, so what can you do.
