I have owned 5 X5's and this is the first E70.

Either BMW has taken a big step back and can't build and SAV for Sh*#@ or the Sport Maxx tires REALLY blow. Not just kinda....but REALLY blow.

My E53's have had 19's or 20's on them. But the tires were either Toyo's or Pierilli Scorpions. Never had an issue.

Today, not once but TWICE I was sitting at a light in the snow storm and started to slide off the road....sideways. And there is decent amount of tread left too. They are not bald. Couldn't stop or accelerate worth anything. It is sad when a RWD Ford panel van out accelerates you.

BMW should be ashamed they ever put such crap on a BMW.

Now to place an order for Toyo's.

Be happy you don't have any snow to deal with. High pucker factor driving today. And I never felt uncomfortable in an X5 B4

First thing I did, remove the Latitude Runflats and got some Toyo G02+ Installed. A more comfortable ride AND better traction in the winter here.

Yes, runflats have their drawbacks, the main one being their ride quality compared to a non-run flat tire.

If you are complaining about traction of the 20" Dunlop Sport Maxx in the SNOW, then it is your fault. Those are summer high performance tires and should NOT be driven in snow/ice/very cold weather or you are putting yourself and others at risk. That is why the little snow flake comes on it the truck to let you know NOT to use summer only tires below that temp.

Please DO get some other tires, preferably winter tires if you are worried about snow traction.

p.s. Here in the Texas Hill Country, if it gets too icy to drive on summer tires I just stay home to till warms up :)

I call Bullshit. Yeah, I thought to myself....let me put others at risk today. You have ZERO idea (driving TWO 20in equipped X's) what they could do. Hell the 20in Dimerias were better than the RF's. Do you have proof that they were not? I have pictures proving that they (Michillen's) were decent (not a studded snow) in deeper snow than this.

Of course, if you wanna be a deep snow and Ice warrior we should all drive on 16in studded snows, or better yet sit at home.

So taking the stance that I purposefully put others and myself in danger is silly. And the "Flake" comes on on all German cars. I tell ya what, my Porsche 4S with its all seasons does not slide off the road while sitting still. My Audi could come to a stop with its FACTORY 19's (Continentals). And my wife's 04 4.8IS with stock Dimeras could get up the driveway tonight.

My POINT was that BMW made a grave error in selecting these tires as usable in anywhere above the equator.

Tell me something. You have two beautiful X's. When the weather in your area (Ohio right) goes to poop do you just leave them parked and drive your old F150? I would be a bit disappointed in the 100+k in BMW's you have that are not expected to be semi safe below 32 degrees.

I am sorry if this feels like a personal attack, but I was just at a loss to be so let down by my X5 today. Of the 20+ BMW's I have owned I have ALWAYS said the X5 was the best all around BMW due to it being fun and not getting stuck (and carrying things). I have even taken the X5 driving course in Spartanburg.

I enclosed a picture so you know I am not all BS. The snow today was nothing like the picture. The Silver one was on stockies as well. Now the M5 was stock tires (not rims) on a frozen lake in Georgetown CO.

RFTs have a stiffer sidewall. That is how they can go 150 miles or whatever when they are flat. And the 19's on the e53 were non-RFT.

I'm with Funf Dreisig--here in TX we just ride out bad weather :popcorn:

His point was the Dunlop SP Sport Maxx are not intended to be driven in snow. It has nothing to do with them being RFT, but everything to do with their tread design and compound. You yourself mentions the Porsche does fine with all-seasons, why try summer max performance tires in the snow.

BTW, BMW advises to not run the summer performance tires in the snow so its not like they aren't telling you not to.

I agree with you. My point was that we should be able to count on some semblance of reliability in minor conditions. Heck, there was less than 3in.

They just seem to be a very poor choice to have on anything where the weather turns even slightly down.

I will be driving the Audi tomorrow.
