Buying an 08 E70

Morning All,

I am buying a 2008 X5 and am interested in your opinions as to 3.0L vs 4.8?

I have a 4.8IS E53 currently, other than the fun factor, I don't haul anything, I just drive a great deal of miles every year.

Please let me know if you would.

Thanks.

I think that the 4.8is has a nicer exhaust note and may therefore feel a litlle more sporty, but the e70 feels more planted and has a more compliant ride even with the sport package, also feels like more of a tank.

judging from your history of vehicles, you're not going to be satisfied with the 3.0si. Sometimes I wish it had more grunt... don't need it all the time, would be a waste hauling kids everywhere, but some of the time I feel like it needs more pickup. DS mode would work, but I'm not going to bothered doing that here and there. I wonder how the M drivers handle it - how often they flick that M button.

I think 4.8 is more appropriate engine for the heavy car like X5 and you will have more fun to drive it over the years. Friend of mine just bought 2011 3.5i and his MPG in NYC is about 15mpg. My 4.8i is 13mpg. Not a big difference, but much more fun with 8 cyl.

From what I've read a lot of those with the 3.0 wished they went with the 4.8. Coming from a 550 there was no way I would have got the 3.0. The X5 is heavy.

4.8 give mores power and fun, with poorer fuel economy and reliability.

3.0 has better fuel economy and reliability, but less power and less fun.

BMW I-6 engines are sweeter engines than BMW V-8's, in my opinion, but the X5 is a very heavy vehicle.

Your choice.

Key thing with any used BMW is low mileage and previous good care. I personally would not buy a used X5 with more than 40-50K on it, I'd pay more for a low mileage one or save my pennies to buy a new one with 4 years of warranty.

Is the 4.8 different in the E70 than the E53? If so, I get 19.8 over 20K miles, should i expect to see a big variance?

19.8! wow! i never seen those numbers in the city. calm highway cruising maybe

engines are the same. tranny is different and 07 and up x5 is bigger and heavier
