had the fuel sensors replaced twice. The inside of my car smelled like gas for weeks :(

Yep, had the same problem (a full tank only showed 3/4). Finally took it in and the dealer (Dreyer and Reinbold BMW) replaced both in-tank fuel sensors.

I've had several BMW's... what a piece of crap this X5 is. My nits are this stupid fuel gauge, the crazy rear door rattles, seat rattles, interior trim deterioration, air suspension failure, seats get wet each time you open the door when it's raining, etc..
