I know which piece you were speaking of, just couldnt find it on the diagram. As you well know, this piece is 'free floating' and should never see any forces during normal operation. Shifting loads in the back or heavy objects when open can crack it- then when you open it they can get worse.

Good luck with the CPO. Unless I was 110% sure it was covered, there is no way I'd sign any kind of work order to have the dealer 'look into it'. $100, done. Do it over the internet and never have to drive to and from the dealership. For me, avoiding a trip to the dealer is worth hundreds....

wait do you guys pay $100 just for dealers to look at your car?

No, I was saying pay the $100 to order it over the internet and pop the piece in place. Total time to me is 7 minutes (1 to order, 1 to open the box, 5 to install). Done. Easier that driving to a dealer to be told "sorry, it wasn't covered- and it was $278 with labor".

I dont think BMW used "Cheap Plastic"...at least on mine it is used a dozen times a week, 40k miles, 30 months, no failure.... again, a singular experience.

Lately, I noticed a crunching/ctacking sound when dropping the tailgate. I examined it and found the plastics hinges were snapping off. Now it has completely come off in my hand.
Has anyone else experienced this? If so, do you know if this is covered under CPO warranty? I only have 76k on the clock and this appears to be a materials defect.

Just came across this thread , I had the same issue, they fixed under warranty. Mine was cracked when it was just under 10k odo.

Had mine replaced for free 6 months after ownership of the new car. Bad design on BMW's part, but it's not covered under warranty. Most of the plastic hinges fell apart.
Some of it is my fault - I have placed heavy cooler on the lower tailgate many times, and also put my own weight (knees) a few times doing something back there. The hinges should probably not be plastic, or at least not as thin.

Dealer replaced free of charge (nice).
