Tailgate slide is cracked to hell!
I'm not sure what the piece is called but I'm referring to the part of the tailgate that slides when you drop the bottom part of the tailgate.
Lately, I noticed a crunching/ctacking sound when dropping the tailgate. I examined it and found the plastics hinges were snapping off. Now it has completely come off in my hand. Has anyone else experienced this? If so, do you know if this is covered under CPO warranty? I only have 76k on the clock and this appears to be a materials defect. |
Have you read your CPO warranty?
First, as I recall it will not cover "trim". Second, if it is the piece I am thinking of, the only way for it to get damaged and fail is due to 'abuse' by the owner- you, someone else, prior owner, etc. I assume this is the part: Trunk lid trim panel. Fits: X5 | BMW of South Atlanta |
From my dealer experience, CPO (or dealer) has covered replacement if it appears the materials were not up to standard. I have had various trim pieces, ranging from window switches to gear sticks, replaced before.
Strangely, the piece I'm referring to does not appear to be on that parts list you posted. Although it appears every other piece of the tailgate is there. The piece I'm talking about bridges the gap between the bed and the tailgate, when it is lowered. And it didnt start cracking until I had the truck for at least 4 months. Simply lowering the tailgate would cause the hinges to crack. That's why I'm curious to see if this has happened other owners. http://epautos.com/wp-content/upload...8/gatedown.jpg |
Sigh...I miss the aluminum sliding rails...never use them, just like the functionality of it...
I know which piece you were speaking of, just couldnt find it on the diagram. As you well know, this piece is 'free floating' and should never see any forces during normal operation. Shifting loads in the back or heavy objects when open can crack it- then when you open it they can get worse. Good luck with the CPO. Unless I was 110% sure it was covered, there is no way I'd sign any kind of work order to have the dealer 'look into it'. $100, done. Do it over the internet and never have to drive to and from the dealership. For me, avoiding a trip to the dealer is worth hundreds.... |
I agree 100%

I had mine replaced under the new car warranty. They replaced it with an upgraded/beefier piece of plastic. You can now sit on it without it cracking.
The only way you'll be sure about a CPO claim is if you ask your dealer or the dealer performing the work. My understanding is that it won't be covered under CPO, but it's up to the SA to determine "how to write it up" for the claim. |
Just paid 384.00 to replace that part for the same reason. They didn't cover it for me.
