Mandatory Rearview Camera rules delayed

Rearview car camera rules postponed by government - Feb. 29, 2012

That's not good news. I think that they can really help with child safety -- even the poor ones on the pre-LCI X5 (like mine)....

I dunno. Good for child safety I guess, but I hate to think of all the people who will start backing-up using just the rear camera, and get hit by traffic from the left or right. The Law of Unintended Consequences means a lot of people will no longer look behind them with their eyes, and depend exclusively on the camera.

I agree...the CEO's '10 Hyundai Tuck is the first car we have ever had with back up cam; even though it's decent quality, it is a crutch I find myself not fully trusting, and not really providing for the standard look/check and, common sense.

Everyone likes 'tech'; few of the tech gizmos are life savers in the sense that the 'cost' and added complexity prevents the ubiquitous idiots from relying on that 'tech'. Human nature, lack of awareness, multi-tasking, and just plain stupid cannot be covered by, or compensated for, by 'tech', imo.

Ford has a neat little gizmo that detects traffic from the sides when backing up.

Rear camera's? good idea IMHO.

Anything that will assist the imperfections that human nature, lack of awareness, multi-tasking, and just plain stupidity brings about in my view is a good thing. Now all we gotta do is convince people to use all their powers of observation so they won't
run over the garbage can let alone a child or me for that matter.

Is there no limit to how much we will foist upon ourselves to 'make us safe'???

We have GOT to realize how much this costs.

How about a hard limit on speed? no car can move at more than 70mph (or whatever the max is in the states) ....Anything to help make us safe, right?

finnbmw 03-03-2012 10:51 AM

This is good news. Ard is right, where do you put the limits on government intrusion into our lives using safety as an excuse? Nanny busy bodies at work.

After lived on this planet for a half century in four different countries, I've come to the following conclusion: In any given civilized society, the sum of freedom and safety is always constant. I'll let you ponder on that...

If the government is going to meddle, how about mandatory parenting classes instead. If small children are running around where there are moving vehicles, it isn't a vehicle's blind spot that is at fault.

Slippery slope baby.....just cannot do ANYTHING that might indicate some people ought not to be parents.
