Front Brake Sensor temporary bypass

I replaced the front pads before the sensor was activated. Unfortunately the sensor was unwilling to be removed easily and as a result I snapped it. Apparently the service reset procedure will not work when the sensor is defective. I have ordered a replacement, but it will be months before I get it since I live in the interior of Panama. The dealer is a 2 hour drive and nothing happens unless I leave the car for a day. I have tried unsuccessfully to determine with an ohm meter if any of the 3 wires in the end piece are looped so I could temporarily by pass the sensor. Any suggestions regarding how to reset the service nag? The algorithm now tells me I must have the pads replaced. TIA.
BTW, the low dust pads I purchased from NewTek seem to live up to their promise.

front brake pad wear sensor (as well as rear sensor) has only 2 wires which is one pair. when those two wires are shorted to each other, the system will think that the brake pad indicator is functional - when the pads wear too thin, the rolling rotor cuts through the metal of the sensor and thus interrupts the integrity of the connection...

You mentioned THREE wires - not sure which ones you are talking about...

when i buy pads, i also buy the sensors to go along with them, it is much easier, even if the original sensor is still good, you just replace it along with the new pads... not sure how much it is in Panama, but sensors cvan be had for under $10... I don't think you can get them at the Colon though, or at Albrooks mall... mail-in orders only...

I had a tire blow out once in Panama, and it was hard to find a tire in 20" for my X5 - but I was lucky and found one...

Thank You Terminator, I was looking at the broken piece of sensor which does have 3 conductors. Looking closely now it appears that I did burn through as I see the three bits of copper on the wear surface. 2 have continuity one does not. Regardless, I will cut the cable and join the 2 wires to get rid of the nag. I planned to change the pads BEFORE the sensor but my timing was off by a day. Panama is recently much better for getting stuff but I still avoid dealer costs when I can. The mountains are tough on brakes and tires.

Found a simple circuit schematic

E53 had 2 wires. E70 has three. First interrupted circuit is used to project pad life. Second is used to confirm it is getting close, similar to the E53.

OP: use the rear sensor, disconnected, to determine the resistance between each pair of pins. Duplicate that with your front sensor until you get a replacement. I posted a link previously here with the BMW tech literature description of the functionality of the new sensor. Good luck.

Snipped off the broken sensor, joined the two (2) wires, reset the service nag and all is well. I will install the new sensor when I come back.

Excellent!!! glad it worked for themporary fix, make sure you get a replacement sensor soon enough, otherwise it will rather hard to fit it back onto a worn pad...

:)

How many brake pad sensors are on the e70? My wife's 328xi only had sensors on the front driver side and rear passenger side. Didn't help me when the front passenger side went down to metal.

E70 has two, front dvr side, rear pas side.

out of curiosity, what is the mileage remaining before the first stage is triggered? I want to change my pads before the warning goes off. I have 1700kms left to go according to the idrive.

Also, does anyone know the minimum thickness of the rotor before new ones are required. Thank you!

I would almost guarantee you that you have worn through the first trigger step. It is a calibration trigger, for the CBS. If I was designing such a trigger, I would put it at about half life of the pads, on the assumption that the second half life would wear as quickly as the first half did.

Just buy the sensor, it isn't expensive. They also get brittle from the heat, so it is good practice to replace them in any case.
