Aerodynamic kit (replica) installed this weekend

Wanted to share my weekend DIY with folks.

I purchased an aftermarket replica kit on eBay after reading several writeups and reviews from members.

Aero Kit = $300
Paint = $300
BMW hardware (additional) = $20
PDF instruction found on this forum
Total Time = 3 hours

It took me 1.5 hours for each front and rear. Fit and finish looks great to me for a replica kit, but I do suggest getting the BMW clips with self taping screws as the one provided just don't fit right. 16 clips and 20 self tapping screws from Tisher, look them up on RealOEM. You can use the supplied tapping screws for anything else that don't need to be secured into the BMW clips. Pretty simple DIY and overall fun project to do . Pics below.

Agreed!;)

rh71 03-25-2013 05:23 PM

significant savings and worth it for a part that is aesthetics only.

Since you know the inner workings of the install, can you tell me why [on mine] the rear quarter of the aero kit may not be flush against the black bumper? The part just beyond the exhaust pipes, that is actually on the side of the car. Can it be adjusted easily to be flush?

jayjay_dee 03-25-2013 05:45 PM

Looks good for aftermarket...

Our X5s are almost identical, im currently in the process of buying 20" reps, either 300 or 310.

jayjay_dee 03-25-2013 05:50 PM

oh, and you might want to add the arch flares too if you are considering 20" wheels.

balx5 03-25-2013 05:52 PM

rh71,

You might want to remove the painted rear side piece and try to refit it again. It's a very tight fit and the painted cover has to clip on to the black frame piece leaving not gap. Sorry I dont have pic of the rear assembly or I could point it out to you more easily. If there is a gap it might have to be readjusted so its closer to your bumper. I hope that helps.

Wow same deal here, I was contemplating about the 300's too as they are concave and split spokes and of course the 214' but cant seem to find a set right now. And yeah the rear arches too...

Thanks again for sharing your previous tips and experience.

1naztyx5 03-25-2013 08:47 PM

that looks very good, on the last pic of the rear is that a gap between middle and left piece or shadow?

ALPINE_X5 03-25-2013 09:00 PM

The Aero Kit gives the X5's last final touch that makes it special to me. I like it more than the Painted Flairs and no side steps. That's my personal taste of course :)

The Style 214's really fit the car well. I looked for Replicas in 21" even 22" but they don't come in Staggered Fitment.

The next style for me would have been the 300m Split Spoke. I have considered these in 22" as well but I really like the 214's right now. Since the spacers were put on they look even better. 12mm in front and 20mm in the rear and Lowered.

Fender flares for sure to complete the look.

That looks great. I've been wanting the Aero Kit too, but couldn't decide on $900 OEM set or the $300 ebay ones. I was afraid I would get a poor quality set from eBay. This really makes me feel alot better seeing someone having success with an ebay aftermarket set.

Can you give me the ebay link and which seller it was? There are dozens of these sets on ebay, so it was hard to pick one.

Thanks!

I got mines from here but I think all these sellers get it all sourced from a similar place.

Good luck and post pics when done.

Thanks! So the only hardware I need:

Fillister head self-tapping screw (20) P/N 07147137416

C-clip nut, self-locking (16) P/N 07146951655

The RealOEM site
RealOEM.com * BMW E70 X5 4.8i Aerodynamics package

Shows other hardware and rivets... So I don't need any of those?

balx5 03-26-2013 11:32 AM

Not all the hardware is needed as you can see from realOEM it also includes the side rocker panel.

I basically cross referenced the PDF instruction and real OEM. Alson in one of the pics I have the 2 differnt clips and self tapping screw with a part number

This is what I ordered:

Phillips tapping screw P/N#07146959925 = 20
(small)C-Clip nut P/N#07146951655 = 14
(large)C-clip nut P/N#07146981767 = 2

And that's it.

That's the one, you guys should be good to go.
BTW it pretty hard to get it done in .5 hours as the instruction states, due to having to adjust and align everything up. Have fun with it and take your time

Happy to report that aero kit was delivered today. I examined all the pieces and they seem to be good quality. sturdy and well-made. I haven't started the install yet. Have to find a body shop to paint the pieces first.

BalX5: These are the 3 types of screws that came with the kit. I know that self-tapping screws are the middle one, but did you use the long one on the left and the short ones on the right during your install?

I have the OEM hitch, and I'm gonna attempt to cut the opening for the hitch like others have done on this forum.

The aftermarket kit came with extra rivets and screws that are not needed. In fact I still have half a bag left in the garage. The rivet on the left is not needed but for the rear I used like 4 of the short ones for the center, but not neccassary.

I got my paint done at a local body shop. Just call around your area as the $$$ will range from $250-$450 depending. If you add all the pieces together its is not more than a full bumper to paint and prep.

+1 also, if you can't leave your car with the body shop, take off your gas cover and leave it with them so they have something to match. that's what I did.

Please send $20 to Paypal I will send you my instruction with photo, quick and easy to do, you need to buy nothing.
Thanks,

Bro,

Can this be based on trust, you send me the instruction and once done, I pay my due. Thanks
Joe
The guy in Brazil said same thing to me. He never paid after my instruction. I understand you have your suspicion because you read the posts. Keep your word. I am sending you now. Let me know when you receive my instruction. Send me your email, if you have problem with this. Do you have a US model tail lights?
Have fun with the project.
Joe
The first photo is the right rear tail lamp connector, pin#s marked on the side. The fourth and last photos is the left rear tail lamp. Let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks for trusting, action is louder than word, I ask a local dealer to order for me so have no idea if it is a US model. Give me about a week and I shall send you the money once I have done it.
By the way, I can't see any photos that you have sent. My email, [email protected]

Are those some unique instructions that you've developed yourself? Or just a version of the common knowledge that people exchange freely at sites like bmw-coding?

It's a relatively unsophisticated technique that me and my buddy who is a master mechanic have developed. Nothing is involved with bmw-coding forums.

Hamlay 08-07-2013 07:13 AM

Great info on how to fit an Aero kit.

I've got a slightly related questions. The front drivers side part of my aero kit is slightly damaged where the previously owner had hit a hgh kerb (or similar). So I want to remove it, have it repaired then refitted.

Do the fixings allow for removal and re attachment or will I need to buy a new fixings kit (if they are available).

The kit I have was fitted new by the BMW dealer so is OEM.

Many thanks,
Hamlay

Certainly front painted reflectors, I had spacers before but might do all around this time instead of the fronts.

First I need to get some dust free pads and get rid of the run flats.
