Rear brake bulb malfunction

Rear left 2 stage brake light malfunction keeps tripping. I have changed the bulbs and cleaned the contacts and still keeps happening. Any ideas?

What year & model? Do you ever notice moisture or water in then after washing or a rainy day? I have the same issue on my 07 3.0si. It is due to weak sealing around the light housing that causes water or moisture to go in and cause the malfunction. I plan to switch it with a new light housing which was updated to include a better gasket sealing around it.

I have a 07 4.8! Biggest piece of shit I have ever owned! Looking forward to the day I could get something else! Hopefully soon!

Thanks for the information.

You most likely have to replace the socket. Same thing happened to my '08 4.8i. I believe it was around $18. You just have to replace whichever side has the malfunction. Takes about 5 minutes. Do it soon or it'll overheat and burn like mine did.

Happened to my 07 3.0si. This is the rear fog lights, right? I changed the bulb and the notification has not come back on ever since. About 3-4 months ago. Good luck!

Crazy part is I don't know which light it is. Everything works fine! On the I-drive, it jut say left side 2 stage brake malfunction. (I think I'm wording that right).

It's fairly easy to change. Rear fog light is located on the hatch.

Now my passenger brake assembly insert melted. Inside where the socket attaches to the housing. Can't even fit a new light bulb in there. Called the dealer and they want $329 without install. Looks fairly easy to instal (3 bolts).

Do I need any coding to replace that quarter panel light assembly? Also, what is the difference between a 2007 brake light vs the newer light assembly and would I need coding with those also?

I'm unclear as to what part has failed. You mention the brake light, which is an LED assembly, and then mention something about a bulb. Are these two different issues (i.e. the brake light has failed and a bulb socket has melted)? The description about installing three bolts leads me to believe you're referring to the brake circuit board.

You stated you can't figure out what has failed as everything is working. Perhaps the malfunction is in the emergency braking light. This is the additional brake lighting which illuminate under an emergency braking condition (see owners manual). Thus pressing the brake pedal to troubleshoot may give the impression everything is OK as the additional brake lighting may not illuminate under normal circumstances.

Price for the part seems kind of high. I think mine cost $167.

Sorry it's the rear brake light assembly (right side). It's the upper brake light bulb socket. Different than my earlier post. I just ordered it off of Morristown BMW for $210 shipped.
