There will be two versions, a 3.0 (due spring 08) and a 4.4 (due Summer 08).

We were both surprised by the 4.4 engine and weren't sure if it was a typo, but it was repeated twice in the fax.

Can anyone else confirm this information? I was hoping to bypass the X5 and get one by January but that won't be the case unfortunately.

The Wikipedia article for the BMW X5 also mentions the 4.4 Twin Turbo, and even gives an engine code (N64B44O1). No source is given for this information.

The engine code is correct- what is not finalised is the final HP and Torque numbers.

No , it's not.

Last digit in the code indicates engine's version. So, the initial versions when launched are always coded with number "0". Upgrades that follow in the futue are coded with higher numbers eg 1, 2, 3 etc

The N64 will definitely have number "0" at the end of the code. :thumbup:

Also the last letter in the code indicates engine's power output.

T = highest power output
O = high power output
M = medium power output
U = low power output
K = lowest power output

So, don't be so sure the could is N64B44O1.

N = new generation engine model (M = standard current version; S = sports M engines )

6 = code for number of cylinders (4 = 4cyl, 5 = 6cyl, 6 = 8cyl, 7 = 12cyl, 8 = 10cyl)

4 = type of the engine (1 = SULEV/PZEV, 2 = Double Vanos + Valvetronic, 3 = petrol with direct injection, 4= petrol with direct injection + turbochargers, 5 = Double Vanos without Valvetronic, 7 = diesel + turbochargers)

B = fuel type (B = petrol, D = diesel, H = hydrogen, G = natural gas, E = electricity)

44 = engine displacement in deciliters (44 = 4.4L, 30 = 3.0L, 20 = 2.0L etc)

Are you saying that the last digit is wrong? Or is it the letter?

At least one charachter in the code is wrong , the last digit.

0 is OK , 1 isn't.

N64B***0

Let the 3 stars be a surprise for the time being. :thumbup:
