Please excuse my ignorance, but how did you find out exactly where your new ride is i(was, at this point, since it is now built) in the production line? All I can get from BMW is that my X6 is somewhere in the production cycle.

Get your production number from the dealer. You can then either create a log on at bmwusa to track it or you can call the 800 number.

EDIT: I just checked the order status on my BMWUSA website and it matches what the operator said on the phone. It also finally has the correct color of my car. This time however, it doesn't show my selected options (sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't).

Friday the 13th.....our lucky day. I just confirmed PCD for my X5 35d on the 13th.

I'm pleased to be in such good company....I'll be bringing my daughter for her 17th b-day, so I'll be on my best behavior.......

It's a long enough wait already, now I have your ticker to deal with too......

ciao !

Many thanks for the info. Very helpful. I have the production number, and have been trying to track it online at BMWUSA. But now that I know that I can actually speak to a live person about the status of my "in production" X6, I'll give it a try tomorrow. BTW, have you noticed that for "build your own" on the BMW website, they are still showing the 2009 model configuration?

This kind of wonderful comraderie I'm reading on these forums is what I have missed ever since I left BMW back in 1990 to go to the dark side with Mercedes. MB club was a real bore. I wish that I could take factory delivery of my X6, but my bizarre job schedule won't allow it. Maybe a drive down to SC to take the two day driving school will be possible when we have our next vacation. Has anyone on this forum ever taken the driving course down there?

BTW, the 2009 328i with rear wheel drive that my dealer has loaned me to drive until my X6 arrives handles better in the rain that my retired 2009 Mercedes E350 4-matic. Go figure.

Thanks. Tried to get a factory tour about 18 months ago when our orchestra was playing in Greenville and had the next day off, but factory was closed to tours because they were gearing up for new model production (which happened to be for the X6). Will definitely get down there when I can to take driving school and tour.

Go for it, I've done it twice and its been a sad commentary how its gone from 60/40 US/Export to 30/70 (BS perspective based figure). Call ahead and ask and they'll tell you.

Interesting that only 30 percent of production originating in Greer, SC goes to US customers. I had no idea that the X5 and X6 were that popular overseas, even though I am reading many posts from people around the world. I always thought that the large X vehicles were more of an "American thing". Maybe availability of diesel engines in both X5 and X6 (which we cannot get in US) has something to do with those worldwide sales dynamics. Interesting that fewer diesel X5's are being made available for US customers, even though they have been very popular, and are much more difficult to find than petrol models.

well, 98% of statistics are BS. But theres a noticeable difference between NAM and Exports, and with our economy last summer, there were definately more 3.0 diesels without sunroofs and orange taillights than dark blue or space gray cars with Nav and Heated Seats. (Not a knock, cause I would have probably taken one)

They're all over on 85, at least there are billboards pointing to them... In Greenville, If you go downtown on Main Street, there are several outfitters too, I think the fan favorite at school is the one with the NYC style window case in the front (where you walk in and theres a display before the door) (on the right if you park at the Richardson Street Garage and walk towards falls park)

If you haven't booked a hotel near the plant in SC yet, I can heartily recommend the Westin Poinsett in Greenville. I stayed there for three nights two years ago with the National Symphony on tour, and it was fabulous. Prices are pretty reasonable, according to their website. Phone number there is 864-421-9700. We've toured all over the US in my 40 years in the orchestra, and this hotel is as good as any and better than most.

BTW, got word that my 2010 X6 5.0 has left the plant and is now on its way to the dealer in Pennsylvania. Should get it early next week. It's only been four weeks since I placed the order. Not too shabby.

Thank you. Very best of luck to you with your new X6. I've owned many BMW's and Mercedes over the years, but this X6 has me more excited than anything ever has.

I didn't know that BMW takes care of the hotel if you pick up your vehicle at the plant. Truly a class act. I hope to be able to drive down to Greer for a plant tour and driving school asap. But my symphony schedule is so weird that I can't get away at more "normal" times. Bummer.

No, I didn't go for the performance upgrade since I went with the 19" all season tires because I drive up to Northern Michigan so often. Dealer felt that unless I went with the performance tires, extra power would probably not be worth it. He races BMW's, so I took his advice. Still have to wonder if I should have done it. But I did go with all packages (sport without 20" wheels) and all options including soft close doors, active ventilated seats, HUD, premium sound system (which isn't really very good but better than the base system) etc. Even with the standard 400 horses I won't have much opportunity to really drive it around here in the DC metro area. To be honest, one of the reasons I went with the X6 vs. a 535xi was I needed to have something bigger so that the turkey drivers around here won't be able to run me off the road any longer. DC is full of a lot of angry people who take their anger out on the road. This will be my 10th BMW, but first since I got rid of my 1989 530i (which was a real dog) and went to Mercedes.

I hear you on wheels. If I was getting 440 horses I would get 21" wheels to really enjoy the handling of the car. And a separate 19" set for winter.

I'm not screwing with wheels....yet. I don't like any of the options enough to push me to the other side. Now, if Rastagurl's wheels would fit, I'd definitely consider it.

But I still have the issue of them fitting in the track at the car wash. I asked about the 325s and was told they wouldn't fit. I'll have big wheels on a dirty X....

So unless I get offers for someone to handwash my girl twice a week, I'll be driving on chick wheels.

Very good point on the carwash issue. I never thought about that. Given the fact that the X6 is wider than the X5 (which is already pretty big), I have to wonder if there will be problems with going through commercial car washes. The laser washes probably won't be a problem since they measure the length and width of the vehicle before starting. But for the washes with the tracks and cloth mechanicals, I just wonder...

I like rastagurl's wheels too, but too much surface area to show brake dust on.
Don't you have any hand car wash place around you? I have 2 close to me and one without the tracks. More and more hand car wash places are opening these days. Good business for those unemployed.

Believe it or not, there are no hand car wash places anywhere near where we live in northern Virginia. Either laser wash or mechanical washes with rails. The Sonic wash near where we live does a very good job, but has rails. I hope that with the 19" rims and higher profile tires instead of the 20" performance tires for my X6 should be OK with the rails. I'm going to have my dealer put on the Simoniz Glass Coat which should help if I decide to do the laser washes. Everyone I've met who has had this new Simoniz product put on their cars seems to be very pleased. Anyone else had any experience with Glass Coat?

cmyX6go 10-24-2009 01:28 PM

I currently have the same size tires and wheels on my X5 and it fits in the tracks at the car wash. I had no problem with the 19" staggered set up either, which had 285 rears.

When I was desperate for a clean car, I tried only two "mechanical" car washes. Both times my car's rear tires (315's) could not get into their tracks. One was in Leesburg, VA? and the other was in Nyack, NY. So now, I 'hunt' for hand car wash establishments where ever I go outside of my 'home' area (sometimes driving for a long while, just for it.)

My point exactly. I don't have anything close by and I'm anal about my car being clean. I do the car wash twice a week. The one I go to does a really good job. The brushes are made out of that blue fabric/rubber kind of stuff. No swirls.

I think that the Sonic car wash near us uses the soft fabric brushes. I've spoken with customers with black cars who get their vehicles washed there often, and they all told me that there was no problem with scratches. I always carry clean towels with me to wipe down the vehicle after the wash since I can't know if the towels the guys are using are really clean. Also had some good luck if there is not a lot of dirt going through a laser wash without any brushes.

BTW, does anyone know of something I can put on my wheels that will help keep off the brake dust?

Right on. I have two sets of gloves I always carry with me in my vehicle. One pair is for when I put fuel in, and the second is only for when I have to wipe down the exterior after a wash. Also carry some throw away, one use towels to clean the wheels.

Thanks for sharing this info. Will go there and get some. I use micro towels to clean my bassoon. I just ordered 500 lint free disposable special cleaning cloths used to clean and dry microscopes, lab equipment, and fragile items. These are supposed to also absorb liquids of all kinds, including oils without scratching. Should be interesting.

I find that BJ's offers smaller portions of food product's that makes it more desirable than Costco. The Costco in Long Island City is a zoo and not worth the hassle. I do buy some electronics form Costco on line.

Glad I could help and sorry for the high jack.

It's almost show time. Did the insurance thing today. My tenant at work is going to buy my E70 when I turn it in so she'll have a good home.

WOW - so your E70 is going to see you rolling with a newer/younger model? Hope there is no jealousy there :)

Saw my new X6 5.0 in Mineral Silver at SunMotorCars BMW yesterday. It came in on Monday from South Carolina, and the BMWUSA website still lists it at the preparation center in Greer. I know the fellow who is re-designing the Audi USA website (one of my neighbors), and BMWUSA needs him to get them off their butts and upgrade their online service.

Gonna pick up my new baby tomorrow morning. You should see the service facility at SunMotorCars BMW. Clean as a whistle, and then even imported the red ceramic flooring from Germany that is used in the top dealers there.

Discovered that the 19" all season rft's that came with my sport package are Michelins. I thought that all new Bimmers were coming through with Bridgestones, but was really lucky with the Michelins. Dealer told me that they have had really great luck with the Michelin rft's, and customers with them have been getting 50+K miles on a set, even with hard driving. I had them fill tires with nitrogen with 41/42 psi front/rear. Really looking forward to driving this beast.

Congrats! I requested the Michelins but they said they couldn't request them. What ever tires were on the line when I was produced is what I'd get. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Thanks. I was really surprised to see the Michelins. My dealer told me that he has heard that BMW did not sign an agreement with Bridgestone for all models. Therefore, I'll bet that all X6's with the all season tires will come with Michelins. Don't know what the 20" performance will be. Maybe not Michelin, since 2009 X5.0 w/performance came with Dunlops. According to some other dealers, Michelins are more expensive than Bridgestones (?), and are more difficult to obtain. But one has to wonder. It would be nice to be able to get some info from the factory about all of this since BMW drivers are definitely sensitive to quality of tires. When I went to Mercedes in 1990 until last month, those buyers couldn't care less about the tires...just as long as the car had 4 of them. Sure nice to be back with people who actually care about the performance of their vehicles.

Seems like a excuse, when you buy a $60,000 + truck should be able to get it with Michelin's.

I can remember when I had Bimmers back in the 1970's and 1980's, it was sometimes possible to request certain tires. But then BMW bought part of Continental, and everything came through with them. Luckily, my dealer at that time was nice enough to swap out the Conti's for Goodyear Eagles, which were the best all around tire at the time.

The current situation, as was told to me by my dealer is this: BMW has signed a large contract with Bridgestone for them to supply rft's to specific vehicles in the fleet...but not all. Of course, no one seems to know exactly which vehicles will get what. However, I have ascertained that all 3 and 5 (non M) series are getting the Bridgestones. I saw a 2010 X5M with Bridgestone low profile performance tires (go figure). However, I believe that the X6 with the 5.0 engine is getting the Michelins, but am not so sure about the X6 3.5 (probably due to the different 19" rims). I do not think this has anything to do with whatever tires the factory seems to have in stock at the time. Remember, Michelin has a facility just a few miles down the road from the BMW plant in South Carolina, and with which BMW has a business relationship. Someone at BMWUSA probably knows what is going on but sure isn't talking.

If anyone can get better info that that, I would be interested. The Michelins that came on my 2010 X6 5.0 seem to ride pretty well (still have under 200 miles on the machine), but since my technician put 41/42 PSI front/rear nitrogen in the tires, there is a bit more road feel than what I experienced when test driving other similar X6's.

cmyX6go 10-30-2009 02:58 PM

I have the same Michelins on my E70 and I'm very happy with them. If I wasn't doing the PCD and the X was delivered with the Bridgestones, I'd have them swapped out but that won't work after driving 600 miles home. I'm hopeful though and keeping my fingers crossed.

Low Note, was the Nitrogen fill free? And, why 41/42 lbs?

Bridgestone & Firestone are both the same company and they have a bad recorded, from the 500's to rollovers with Ford. I can't believe BMW would sell cars with Bridgestone tires its like Tiffany selling fake diamonds.

I paid 40 bucks total for nitrogen fill, which is good for life of the tires (I can some added anytime by my dealer for no additional cost). 41/42 PSI is the recommended X6 air pressure for driving over 100 mph or "in a sporting manner", according to BMW. Otherwise, it is usually set at 33/36. My technician, Todd Thomas, at SunMotorCars BMW who has won several awards and is one of the top ten BMW master mechanics in the USA also recommended the 41/42. Another reason for such a high pressure is that run flats tend to wear on the outside edge in BMW X vehicles with minimum pressure. The higher setting will prevent that and will give better fuel mileage, longer tire wear, and much better handling. BTW, the active steering in combination with the 41/42 PSI in my X6 provides amazing directional accuracy at all speeds.

Interesting points you bring up. According to BMW, the third generation Bridgestone all season rft's are only 5% stiffer than non-rft's and have a 400 tread wear rating (same as Michelins). After I traded in my Mercedes E class, my BMW loaned me a new (right out of stock with no mileage) 2009 328xi with Bridgestone all season rft's on 17" rims. I drove the car for almost 900 miles between the time I retired my E class and picked up my 2010 X6. Drove the 3 in all kinds of crappy weather, and it handled extremely well. Much better than any Bridgestone's I had ever experienced. I have a friend who had some bad experiences with Michelins (back in the 1980's), so no one is exempt from QC problems. Some people say that Michelins are famous for not providing any warning before breaking loose at high speeds. Probably won't have that problem on my X6 5.0 with sport package, adaptive drive, etc., but who knows?

Yes and no. Ford chose to use asofter tire running at lower tire pressure to make the ride softer, compensating for stiff/rough riding suspension. If ford has used proper load range tire with proper inflation there wouldn't have been a problem. I put just as much blame on ford as on bridgestone.

You make a good point here. This is one reason why rft's have all earned a bad name, in spite of the fact that some (especially Michelins) have had a very good track record. If rft's are not kept inflated to the maximum (not minimum) recommended pressure, they do not wear well, nor do they handle very well, regardless of the brand. Yes, the first generation Bridgestone rft's had problems. But now with the third generation, most of the problems have been resolved. I happen to like Michelins mainly because they are more prone to be round and easy to balance, and usually have a long tread life. However, this can be at the cost of unreliable handling in emergency situations, where the Bridgestones are often better (softer rubber compound). Pirelli rft's really handle well in the wet, but don't have any tread life.

Weasel 10-31-2009 02:08 AM

On the E90s with 16" bridgestone runflats after 10k miles they'd sound like big mud tires due to the excessively choppy wear on the inner edge... we ended up replacing many of them with continental contipro contact rfts and those seemed to last longer and ride smoother/quieter overall, and are cheaper. Continentals are moving up in the world, getting much better with the newer tires.

cmyX6go 10-31-2009 06:58 AM

I feel sorry for anyone that searches Michelin vs Bridgestone runflats and comes across this thread.

My threads are supposed to be useless.

I agree I just feel that Michelin makes the best tires and that is what I want on my BMW. I am sure that other are fine I just want the best. A BMW would be fine with vinyl seats and you don't really need cruise control and in the same spirit you get stuck with lesser tires. The Toyota that I have needs news tires and I am going to pay more, $30 a tire+/-, for Michelin.

motordavid 10-31-2009 08:39 AM

No experience with the RFT version of any of the above, but I wouldn't bat an
eye over B'Stone tires in general; have had very good service from them. The
Ford situ was cheap azz version of brand name tires and underinflation...

I have heard similar stories from many other drivers (not just BMW drivers) who have had wear problems with Bridgestone rft's. According to the "experts", the third generation Bridgestone rft's will not have such problems. We'll see. My recently retired Mercedes E Class had Conti non-rft's, and they handled well and rode very comfortably, which is something I did not expect since Conti used to be known for making square tires. But in the end, I have to agree with you and others in this forum that Michelin does make the best quality tires in the industry. I will start a new thread about my experience with the Michelins that came on my 2010 X6 as the miles go by.

Maybe it'll work in Virginia. I don't know of anyone that's ever gotten a warning ticket but there's a first time for everything.

E61Silver 11-04-2009 03:16 PM

I still find limit plus nine works in most locations.

I drove to Burlington VT and back passed 2 MASS Cops hiding and they did nothing.

Coming into Queens on the Clearview and a guy with a radar detector passes me and then gets hid by NYC Police with lazar. and gets pulled over.

Bottom line all cops are out to right tickets but if you use your cruise control and thereby limit your speed you can make good time and not get stopped.

PS The New England thruway around Bridgeport is scary. Each time I go through there kids in is low riders are racing and making dumb moves cutting in and out. The cops should get them!

AzNMpower32 11-04-2009 04:05 PM

Cruise = not recommended during break-in. One should vary the revs whenever possible, not exceeding 5000rpm or 160km/h. Plus, I don't recommend cruise control for I-81 because it's too hilly and the system will try too hard to compensate.

Matt, agree on the need for variable speed/rpm during break in, but
wouldn't a run up I-81 offer some good variation. Dunno what part(s)

I'm going to drive it the way I plan on driving it....Just a little easier on the accelerator until I get to my neck of the woods. :D

I've never really driven different during breakins other than not jumping on her and redlining.

AzNMpower32 11-04-2009 06:56 PM

On hilly roads, the cruise control tries really hard to maintain your set speed and it's not as smooth as human throttle input. Even the more "advanced" 325i (that my mom has) still accelerates pretty hard to keep a set speed, the throttle comes on like a big surge all at once. Bad for fuel consumption.

Then again, I guess it could be entertaining to feel the turbos and all that torque kicking in. :zoom:

I live in northern Virginia, and about 8 years ago, just after I bought a Mercedes slk, was driving East on Rt. 66 at about 85 and was nabbed by a state cop. i told him that I had just bought the car (which I had earlier in the day), and he told me he collected Corvettes...and he asked to see the engine of the slk and interior. Really liked the car, and just mentioned that I "should probably watch my speed in the future". Haven't been pulled over since then, but now with my new 2010 X6 5.0, I had damn well better watch my speed. This thing flies.

Leave it to FunfDreisig. Once again, you have come up with one I've never heard before. Quite fitting, by the way

Jayjay already told me I have to do my hot lap with Donnie in the M3. Poor guy, I can't wait to see his face when I ask "OK, which one of you is Donnie" :p:

TQ2k said Donnie is better than any rollercoaster ride. I could have some fun relaying that comment.

:p:

If Donnie is there, and available for the "test drives", he is gonna be
one lucky guy, imo! ;)

:iagree: He is in for the test drive of his career. He'll still be telling tall tales about it in the old folks home. :)

He may have to put away his driving shoes and get some high heels. :yikes:

Sorry to disappoint DSW, no need for a trip there. I'm wearing my old cowboy boots. I may take one other pair of boots with heels :D I can't be heel-less for 3 days

Well certainly not me!
After all, it only takes one counter example to prove that conjecture false. And I'm male and not a heel -- the last time I asked.
But some females have suggested that at least one of my fellow Y chromosome deficient brothers are

L, Have a safe trip, (both ways), and a great time!
(Though having had the pleasure of attending some
events with you, I suspect you could have a good
time in the library! :D ) Wish V&I weren't migrating
Friday, so we could hook up...

Keep it under a hundred and between the fences going
north to NJ/NY! And...Pics, por favor, senorita!

cmyX6go 11-11-2009 08:49 AM

I wish the timing was different, sorry I'm going to miss you. By the time you get your net set up in the starter shack, the picks will be up.

Safe travels to you also.

Thanks, Edge. I'm dying here. This day is dragging.....

I cleaned out the X5 this morning. She goes back at 5pm. The transition from cmyX5go to cmyX6go has begun. :wow:

There is no way I'll be able to sleep the next two nights.

So when will you officially change over the screen name?

alexmish 11-11-2009 09:02 PM

Ouch.... No X for next 36 hours..... Is there a therapy for that ???? :)

Yeah, it is called double you post count at the xoutpost... That is what bro just did in the past 2 weeks while waiting for his baby to be built... Not to mention probably over 1000 IMs he sent me, and I got sh..t done for work over the time.

I had to turn in the E70 and wait for my brother to drive me home. Of course, he was late. While I was waiting, I took advantage of the wifi offered in the cafe while I had a double espresso.

My screen name will change sometime tomorrow.

I'm not going to work tomorrow. My flight leaves at 3pm and I have a ride to the airport so no big deal.

Of course I will. I love the bluetooth.

So it's 4:30am, I'm not going to work today. I don't need to be at the airport until 1:00pm. Someone tell me why I'm up,

I was up at 3 but was able to go back to sleep until 4:10. It was a restless night.

I'm going shopping in my closet right now...No NYC runs necessary :D

Yup, she's gone. The girl who did the lease return last night was soooo happy. I guess she had a bad day, I was her last customer of the day. She asked me for the keys so they could pull it into the shop to inspect it. I told her there wasn't a mark on it...I caught a little .

Anyway, I think she wanted to kiss me. I guess they are used to fighting with people over charges. Now that she's turned in, I can say that I was dingless for the two years. Just one little mark from a valet guy that buffed out.

And yes, tomorrow I will be cmyX6go.

I bet you guys can't wait until this thread finally dies.

cmyX6go 11-12-2009 12:58 PM

Well, I'm heading out the door. Catch you all when I get back. Thanks for all the support and putting up with my impatience over these past several weeks.

And don't forget, any member along the 77, 81, 78 route from SC to NJ is required to come out and salute.

Keep the lights for me and someone hold the fort down.

cmyX5gone signing out. :wavey:

So long, cmyX5go! :wavey:

This has been one of the best, most entertaining threads in months -- maybe even years!

Can't wait to see the pictures and read your recap!

Safe travels down to SC and the journey back! :driver:

(And have fun at Fort San Juan! :tgif:)

I know how much I love the X6 50i every time work on one and drive it, I'm sure we'll get a whole new thread on the PCD experience and how much she loves the new whip when she gets back with it. :2thumbs:

E61Silver 11-12-2009 10:09 PM

She must be in SC by now, wonder if she gets any sleep tonight?

UCrewX5 11-13-2009 09:12 PM

I just talked to L and she is currently in the Charlotte area visiting with Juan and Liz. She had an awesome day at the track and so far is loving the new ride.

X Foomph 11-14-2009 04:42 AM

Hey L,
Congrats on the X6 and possibly the longest thread on this forum and commiserations on losing an X5. Look forward to pics and storyline.
Safe driving.

Bernie (X Foomph)

LeMansX5 11-14-2009 03:37 PM

Just talked to L and she is halfway on her return trip. She is having a blast with the beast. Says, PCD and time at rack is the best experience she ever had.

AzNMpower32 11-14-2009 08:41 PM

I met with L in Staunton, VA today at the midwaz point on her trip (about 45min out from Charlottesville where I'm at). I have a pic but not the card adaptor so I'll upload it tomorrow.

Thank you again for lunch, it was a pleasure to meet you and your friend. Your X6 is a nice ride, slick with the aluminium trim!

cmyX6go 11-14-2009 10:48 PM

Thanks everyone. You guys are great

So, should we lock this up, or let it go and make it a sticky for the most viewed completely useless thread.
