X6 Snow performance?
I thinking of making the switch from an E70 X5 to a 2012 X6. How does the X6 perform in the snow? I will be putting snow tires on as well. Too bad my X5 rims and tires won't fit since I already have them. I do a lot of driving in snowing conditions and like to get outdoors. The X5 fit the bill. Right now I am just struggling with losing precious cargo space coming from the X5. I looked at the Cayenne as well and love the pepper, but the nearest dealer is 100 KMS away (not really same class I know) and reliability is important. I have had a host of issues with my X5 from new, but my BMW dealer is 4 minutes away. Just need a change of vehicle and can't wait for the 2014 X5 re-design.

It seems to me that the X5 and X6 are identical in virtually every way other than the exterior sheet metal (and, of course, the resulting decrease in interior space). Therefore, I don't see how the X6 would perform any differently than the X5 in the snow or otherwise.
The X6 is certainly a bit smaller on the interior. If you like the X5's room, stick with it. If you're curious about whether the X6 would work for you, go to your dealer and ask if you can test drive an X6 for a couple of days. If they won't let you, pack up your X5 as you normally would for an "outing," drive to the dealer, and then ask for a test drive in an X6 with all your kit loaded up in it. That should give you the best idea of "space" you're bound to get short of owning the thing. |
I had a 2010 X6M for a couple hours yesterday, but it wasn't long enough. Good suggestion I will call the dealer this week. THX.

i think your wheels will fit the x6. The only thing you will need is buy two shims that cost next to nothing as the rear hub centric on the x6 is 72.xmm.

X6 snow performance is identical to X5 snow performance. As always, its all about the tires. It seems you already know this so you should be all good.

I just saw that one too! (X6M) that's what i don't want, stuck ... and i don't want a RR sport.

The X6 drive-train is slightly different in that the rear diff has the electronic torque control and hardware not fitted to the E70 (other than the X5M) so the handling is different to the E70. I found no issues in snow up to 6" deep with Winter Tyres fitted (on 19" rims) at the beginning of this year.
